Five Great Danes Named Academic All-District

GREENWOOD, Ind. - Five Great Danes from the UAlbany softball team were named CSC Academic All-District, the organization announced this week.

The 2022-23 Academic All-District Team, selected by members of College Sports Communicators (CSC) (formerly known as CoSIDA), recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes softball honorees in four divisions - NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA. Those named to the Academic All-District teams advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. The honorees will be announced in June.

Graduate student Chloe Lewis, senior Caitlyn Mitros, redshirt-sophomore Kate Powers, sophomore Sierra Fretz, and sophomore Caitlyn Frederick have been named Academic All-District.

Starting 39 games at first base, Chloe Lewis led the team and finished third in the conference with 244 putouts. Seeing her first season as a Great Dane starter, Lewis tallied 21 hits, including four doubles and two home runs, with 11 runs and 15 RBI. After graduating in three years with a 3.83 GPA and a degree in business and concentrations in management and finance, she currently holds a 3.93 GPA in her MBA program.

Coming back from an injury during the 2022 season, Caitlyn Mitros has started all 44 games during the 2023 season. Second on the team with a .356 batting average, she finished fourth in the league in both batting average and sacrifice hits. Holding a 3.92 GPA, she recently finished her degree in psychology with minors in education studies and sociology.

One of the Great Danes' two starting pitchers, Kate Powers finished the season with a 3.03 ERA. Pitching for 97.0 innings, she earned seven complete games, with two shutouts and one no-hitter, in 14 starts and a 10-6 record in the circle. Studying for her degree in biology, she currently holds a 3.89 GPA.

Emerging as UAlbany's designated player in the latter half of the season, Sierra Fretz started 32 games with 38 game appearances. A two-time America East All-Conference honoree, she tallied 27 hits, including six doubles, one triple, and four home runs, with 11 runs and 20 RBI. With a 3.6 GPA, the sophomore is earning her degree in biochemistry and molecular biology.

Last but not least, Caitlyn Frederick saw 23 starts with 35 game appearances. Spending the season moving throughout the batting order, the left-handed batter saw time as the leadoff batter. Getting on base with 14 hits and two walks, she finished with 13 runs. Working for a degree in human biology, she currently owns a 3.53 GPA.
