Softball Sweeps Midweek Contest With CCSU

RECORDS: UAlbany 14-11, 3-3 America East | CCSU 13-12, 8-1 NEC

LOCATION: UAlbany Field - Albany, N.Y.

SHORT STORY: The UAlbany softball team recorded five home runs in their midweek doubleheader against CCSU, Wednesday afternoon. 

GAME ONE

SCORE: UAlbany 4, CCSU 0

KEY STATS
  • Senior Deanna Grahek led the team with two hits, including one home run. 
  • Sophomore Charlotte Lomb recorded her first career home run. 
  • Sophomore pitcher Hailey Errichiello pitched the complete game, including six perfect innings, and totaled 13 strikeouts and zero walks. Her strikeout count more than doubled her previous career-high of six. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Due to a strong defensive effort by both teams, no runners landed on base in the first inning. 
  • Deanna Grahek hit a home run in the bottom of the second inning to put the Great Danes up 1-0. 
  • In the bottom of the third, freshman Julia Pike doubled to center field, which put her in position to make it home on a single by freshman Katie Parisi
  • Junior Gaelen Kelly singled to drive home junior Taylor Quinn and extend UAlbany's lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth. 
  • Hailey Errichiello recorded six consecutive strikeouts across the fifth and sixth innings, eight between the top of the fourth and the top of the seventh. 
  • Charlotte Lomb homered to center field in the bottom of the sixth.
  • CCSU broke the possible perfect game with two singles in the seventh but the UAlbany defense held them on base to secure the four-run shutout victory.

GAME TWO

SCORE: UAlbany 8, CCSU 2

KEY STATS
  • Senior Kasey Conn led the team with two hits, including a double, and two RBI.
  • Senior Sara Anderson batted for a team-high three hits.
  • In addition to Conn, Katie Parisi and redshirt-junior Natasha Mendez added two RBI each.
  • Three Great Danes recorded home runs - Parisi, Mendez, and Julia Pike.
  • Sophomore Hayley Wieczerzak pitched the first four innings of the game and recorded nine strikeouts while only allowing two hits. Pike took over the circle and pitched two innings with two strikeouts before freshman Becca Munslow closed out the game with one strike in one inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Katie Parisi put UAlbany ahead early with a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the first.
  • The Blue Devils answered in the top of the second with a home run of their own to cut the Great Danes' lead in half, 2-1. 
  • UAlbany extended their lead by three in the bottom of the third. 
  • Freshman Julia Pike led off with a homer to left center. 
  • Back-to-back singles from Katie Parisi and Taylor Quinn brought in another run.
  • Senior Kasey Conn also singled to bring home sophomore Mary Kate Murray
  • The score remained 6-1 in the Great Danes' favor through the fourth and fifth innings when each team had runners land on base, but none made it home. 
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Natasha Mendez hit a two-run homer, the first home run of her career, to further extend UAlbany's lead, 8-1. 
  • CCSU managed to bring one more run home in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough to overcome the Great Danes. 

NEXT: The Great Danes will travel to Binghamton for a three-game series (Apr. 3-4).
