The Great Dane Way

MISSION
Be… Great Leaders, Great Champions, Great Danes

Great Leaders
Our student-athletes have a unique platform to be great leaders in competition, in the classroom and in their community.  Providing the necessary resources to help empower them is our focus.  We encourage them to use their platform to be heard and make a difference in this world.

Great Champions
Winning championships is the Great Dane way.  Our coaches find great student-athletes, and our student-athletes find great success on the fields, tracks and courts.  Competition is what we thrive for.  Our student-athletes compete and push themselves day-in and day-out to be ready for any opponent they face.  Champions start within.

Great Danes
We are unique.  We are rare.  Being the only Great Danes in intercollegiate athletics makes us one-of-a-kind.  We take pride in who we are, knowing there is no one like us.  We separate ourselves from the rest and strive to #BeGreat

HOME OF CHAMPIONS

The UAlbany Great Danes have a long and storied history of competing and winning at the highest level. Since moving to the NCAA Division I level as a member of the America East Conference (AEC) prior to the 1999-00 season, UAlbany has amassed 109 AEC championships, averaging an unprecedented 5+ championships per season. The Great Danes have also won 6 Northeast Conference (NEC) championships at the FCS Football level and have won 3 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championships in Women's Golf. In total, UAlbany boasts 118 conference championships.

The championship culture at UAlbany has led the Great Danes to becoming an annual favorite for the America East Commissioner's Cup. The Commissioner's Cup annually recognizes the strongest overall athletic program in the America East Conference and is determined by a scoring system which rewards a school for success both during the regular season and also in championship competition. UAlbany is one of only four schools to have ever won the Commissioner's Cup, lifting it 7 times overall and winning six straight from 2013 through 2018.

Not only have the Great Danes had great success in conference play, but have also competed and won many times on the national stage. UAlbany boasts two NCAA Tournament Semifinal appearances (Field Hockey - 2015, Men's Lacrosse - 2018), two NCAA Tournament Basketball game wins (Men's Basketball - 2014, Women's Basketball - 2016) and have produced four National Players of the Year including Lyle Thompson - Men's Lacrosse - 2014 & 2015; Miles Thompson - Men's Lacrosse - 2014; and Paula Heuser - Field Hockey - 2015. UAlbany also made its presence felt worldwide in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio where Track & Field's Grace Claxton competed in the 400m hurdles, finishing as the 14th fastest woman in the world.

STUDENT-ATHLETE EXPERIENCE

UAlbany Athletics is committed to providing a top-notch experience for all of it's 500+ student-athletes during their time on campus.

Scholarship Commitment
UAlbany Athletics is committed to providing clearly-defined grants-in-aid (athletic scholarships) to student-athletes throughout the period of their NCAA athletic eligibility. UAlbany Athletics will continue to offer full and partial scholarships as permitted by the NCAA. All scholarships will guarantee the amount of the scholarship, the duration and any conditions of the award. UAlbany Athletics is pleased to fully fund all 18 of our programs.

Full athletic scholarships are provided to cover the costs associated with earning an undergraduate degree, including tuition, fees, room, board and course-required books. Partial scholarships pay for specific annual amounts and/or a percentage of educational costs.

Athletics scholarships can only be reduced, canceled or not renewed if a student-athlete 1) chooses to leave the team; 2) becomes ineligible for athletic participation; 3) violates University or Division of Athletics policies; or 4) provides written notification of transfer; however, the student-athlete’s financial aid may not be reduced or canceled until the end of the regular academic term in which written notification of transfer is received. If a student-athlete provides written notification of transfer to the institution between regular academic terms (winter break, summer break) the institution may reduce or cancel the financial aid immediately. Any reduction of a scholarship’s terms may be appealed to an independent panel. Scholarship terms, once awarded, will not change based on injury, illness, nor athletics ability or performance.

While non-scholarship student-athletes do not receive full or equivalency scholarships, they receive all non-scholarship-related benefits provided to all student-athletes.

UNLEASH GREATNESS

Downtown Albany

Albany, NY

Albany is the capital city of New York and is located on the west bank of the Hudson River, approximately 135 miles north of New York City. It is known for its rich history, commerce, culture and architecture stemming back to its original settling in 1614. Albany remains one of the oldest surviving European settlements from the original thirteen colonies and the longest continuously chartered city the United States.

The city constitues the economic and cultural core of the Capital Region of New York State, which comprises the Albany-Schenectady-Troy area and also including the nearby cities and suburbs of Troy, Schenectady and Saratoga Springs. According to the most recent Census information, the Capital Region is the third-most populous region in the state and as of 2010 had a population of 97,856.

Albany's geographic location, which is roughly equidistant between New York City to the south and Montreal to the north, as well as approximately 4.5 hours east of Buffalo and 2.5 hours west of Boston, makes it a convenient and centralized stop in the northeast for nationally touring artists, acts and travelers. The Palace Theatre and The Egg provide mid-sized forums for music, theater and spoken word performances. The Capital Region also boasts close proximity to some of the areas most sought-after attractions including: the Saratoga Race Course - a hotbed of thoroughbred racing for more than 150 years; the Adirondack Park which contains over 6 million acres and 46 high peaks for hiking enthusiasts; and Lake George, the “Queen of the American Lakes”, which boasts 109 miles of shoreline and has been a vacation paradise for nearly 200 years.
