Strength & Conditioning

UAlbany Strength is comprised of five full-time strength & conditioning professionals serving all 19 Division 1 athletic programs year-round in their journey to elevate their standard, be Great Leaders, and Great Champions. 

The Varsity Weight Room, located inside the Physical Education building, consists of two interconnected training spaces totaling 7200 sq ft. The facility is designed to accommodate multiple teams at once while maximizing the training environment for each team and every student-athlete.

North Room 

  • 3600 sq. ft
  • 12 Hammer Strength power stations complete with Eleiko weightlifting bar, customized Perform better bumper plates.
  • Tendo power analyzers at every power station to measure velocity and power output.
  • Six power block adjustable dumbbell sets and traditional dumbbells ranging from 5-120 lbs.

South Room 

  • 3600 sq. ft.
  • 2200 sq ft. turf area with ArenaGear Sports Timer and Wireless Scoreboard for sprinting and change-of-direction work.
  • 12 Hammer Strength power stations complete with Eleiko weightlifting bar, customized Perform better bumper plates, and power block adjustable dumbbell sets at every station.
  • Six Tendo power analyzer units.
  • Post-workout refueling station for all student-athletes.

MEET THE TEAM

The UAlbany men's lacrosse team hosted UMBC at Casey Stadium in Albany, N.Y. on Saturday, March 22, 2025.

Tony Tullock… has been with UAlbany since 2000 and serves as the Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Performance.  He supervises the strength and conditioning program for UAlbany's intercollegiate athletics program.  He has also managed several renovations to the varsity weight room and has been a member of several steering committees with regard to UAlbany athletic facility designs.

Tullock was previously an Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach at Colgate University for two years. He designed and administered strength programs for men's and women's ice hockey, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and softball, and was active with the football and basketball programs. Tullock also handled daily operations of the University Fitness Center, created off-season workouts for athletes, and used video analysis to correct weightlifting techniques.

Tullock, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, was a graduate assistant at the University of Massachusetts for two years. He received a master's degree in exercise science with a concentration in in exercise physiology from UMass ('98), and earned a B.A. in psychology from Boston College ('96), where he was a student assistant. Tullock and his wife, Susan, have two children.

The UAlbany football team visited #10 Baylor at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas on Saturday, September 3, 2022.

Matt Barber… joined UAlbany as the head football strength & conditioning coach in the winter of 2017. Barber oversees all aspects of strength & conditioning for the Great Danes’ football program.

Previous to UAlbany, Barber served as an assistant strength & conditioning coach at the University of Arizona for the 2016 season, working with football, women's basketball, and men’s & women’s track & field.

 From 2014 to 2015, Barber served as the assistant director of football strength & conditioning at the University of Maryland. Prior to the University of Maryland, Barber was an assistant director of strength & conditioning at the University of Nevada from 2012 to 2014. He first arrived in Reno as a graduate assistant strength & conditioning coach in the spring of 2012. Barber also completed internships at the University of Maine, University of Maryland, and the University of Iowa.

He is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and holds certifications in the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and CPR/AED from the American Red Cross.

He graduated from Maine in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology and physical education - exercise science and was a three-year starter on the offensive line for the Black Bears. He earned his master’s degree from Nevada-Reno in educational leadership in 2015.

 Barber currently resides in Clifton Park with his wife, Sara, and his son, Benny.

The UAlbany football team opened the 2025 season at Iowa at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa on Saturday, September 13, 2025.

Michelle Huerzeler… joined UAlbany as an assistant strength & conditioning coach in the winter of 2024. Huerzeler is the main assistant strength and conditioning coach for football and is the head strength and conditioning coach for women’s soccer and rowing.

Previous to UAlbany, Huerzeler served as an assistant strength & conditioning at Yale, working with football, men's lacrosse, women's field hockey, softball, and women's tennis. She was responsible for designing and implementing the strength program for softball and women's tennis.

From 2023 to 2024, Huerzeler served as a Graduate Assistant Coach at Merrimack University, working as the head football strength coach for the winter offseason, as well as programming and implementing programs for men's lacrosse and women's swimming. Prior to Merrimack, Huerzeler was an intern at Boston College and Robert Morris University.

She is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and CPR/AED certified from the American Red Cross.

Scott Schwartz

Scott Schwartz… joined UAlbany as an assistant strength and conditioning coach in the summer of 2025. Schwartz is the head strength and conditioning coach for men's basketball and volleyball, and is the co-head strength coach for track and field.

Prior to UAlbany, Schwartz served as a graduate assistant coach at Merrimack College. There, he worked as the head strength and conditioning coach responsible for programming and coaching men's basketball, men's volleyball, and tennis. Previously, Schwartz held internships at the University of Illinois, Louisiana State University, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Missouri, working primarily with men's basketball and football.

He is Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) through the CSCCA, an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and is First Aid/CPR/AED certified by the American Red Cross.

Schwartz graduated from the University of Missouri in 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Fitness Programming and Management, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Parks, Recreation, Sport and Tourism – Sports Management. During his time at Missouri, he served as a four-year manager and strength intern for the men's basketball team. He earned his Master of Science in Exercise Science (Strength and Conditioning) from Merrimack College in 2025.

Staff Headshot Day Summer 2025

Kaitlin Veigl… joined UAlbany as an assistant strength and conditioning coach in the summer of 2025. Veigl currently serves as the head strength and conditioning coach for women's basketball, softball, and cross country, and is the co-head strength and conditioning coach for track and field.

Prior to UAlbany, Veigl served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at RPI, working primarily with softball, swimming and diving, and men's golf. She also assisted with football and other teams as needed.

From 2021 to 2022, Veigl served as a Graduate Assistant Coach at Springfield College, responsible for the strength and conditioning programs for the women's soccer and men's and women's tennis teams. During her time at Springfield College, Veigl completed internships at Wave Agility & Strength and The College of the Holy Cross.

She is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a Precision Nutrition Level One Certified Nutrition Coach (PN1), and is CPR/AED certified.
