Blaze Riorden Earns Epoch/Lacrosse Magazine Player of the Week

Lacrosse Magazine Story

BALTIMORE – With 20 saves and the goal heard around the world against Cornell, UAlbany goalkeeper Blaze Riorden has been named the Epoch/Lacrosse Magazine Player of the Week.

The America East All-Conference First Team goalkeeper led UAlbany to a 19-10 NCAA First Round victory at Cornell on Saturday, sending the Great Danes to the quarterfinal round in Denver to take on Notre Dame.

Riorden stood strong in goal, earning 20 saves against the Big Red, one shy of his career high.  He earned eight of those saves in the third quarter, helping stop a potential Cornell comeback.

His highlight reel play came towards the end of the third quarter.  After stopping a pass, Riorden ran towards the far side, clearing himself.  He spun his way out of a double team, faked a shot to pull away a defender, got straight away from the cage, shot and scored with five seconds left in the quarter.  That play made the ESPN Sportscenter Top-10 and has been seen over a million times on various videos across the internet.

Riorden is the first UAlbany player to earn the Epoch/Lacrosse Magazine Player of the Week honor this year.
