Women's Basketball Rounds Out 2023-24 Newcomers

ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany women’s basketball program and head coach Colleen Mullen have announced four additional signees coming in for the 2023-24 season. Joining the Great Danes will be Ida Allberg, Gabriela Falcão, Meghan Huerter, and Sarah Karpell.

Going 22-12 in 2022-23, UAlbany saw its second-straight 20-win season. The Great Danes finished the season with an appearance at the 2023 WNIT after finishing the America East season as Co-Regular Season Champions.

Ida Allberg

G | 5-9 | Stockholm, Sweden | Riksbasketgymnasiet Lulea

Quick Background: Allberg is a quick guard that has the ability to impact the game at both ends. She is a skilled player who is capable of getting to the rim with ease, and is an exceptional teammate.

Mullen on Allberg: “We are excited to announce the addition of Ida to UAlbany. She brings a wealth of experience with her many years of playing with the Swedish National Team. She is a tremendous athlete who is a versatile playmaker and a scrappy defender. She is the ultimate competitor and fits our style of play with her work ethic and toughness.”

Gabriela FalcĂŁo

C | 6-1 | Figueira Da Foz, Portugal | Joaquim De Carualho | Lasalle

Quick Background: Gabriela is a strong post player that has great hands and an ability to score both inside and out. She uses her size to alter shots on the defensive end, and rebounds the ball consistently.

Mullen on Falcão: “Gabi is a tough, physical post player that can finish through contact inside. She has played at the highest level in her country, and is an experienced winner. She will be a strong presence in our front line given her ability to score, rebound, and defend. We expect Gabi to make an immediate impact on both ends of the floor.”

Meghan Huerter

G | 5-11 | Clifton Park, N.Y. | Shenendehowa | Providence

Quick Background: Huerter is a tough guard who has proven her ability to compete at a very high level. She has a strong work ethic and a high level of competitiveness.

Mullen on Huerter: “We are excited to welcome Meghan back home to the Capital Region and to the Great Dane family. Meghan is a local talent; she is a pure shooter who has the ability to impact the game in a variety of ways. She is a true student of the game, and her high basketball IQ will make the players around her better.”

Sarah Karpell

G | 5-7 | Holmdel, N.Y. | Saint John Vianney | Fordham

Quick Background: Sarah is a quick, and scrappy guard who brings toughness to every possession. As a point guard, her experience and leadership will make a big impact on the team.

Mullen on Karpell: “We are thrilled to announce the addition of graduate student Sarah Karpell. Sarah joins us from Fordham University, where she played a pivotal role in her team’s success. Sarah is a floor general who plays with poise and great pace. She will add a spark to our defensive backcourt and brings a level of toughness that will motivate her teammates.”
