UAlbany Athletics Announces Departure of Colleen Mullen

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany and Director of Athletics Mark Benson announced today that women's basketball head coach Colleen Mullen has stepped down to accept the head coaching position at the University of Rhode Island.

"We want to extend our sincerest gratitude to Colleen for her relentless dedication to the Great Danes over the past eight seasons," said Benson. "Under her leadership, our program consistently competed at an elite level on the court and maintained a standard of excellence in the classroom and in the community. While we are sad to see her go, we wish her and her family nothing but the best in Kingston."

Mullen leaves a lasting mark on the UAlbany record books, finishing her tenure with an impressive 139-102 overall record, including a 77-49 conference mark. Since taking the reins in 2018, she sustained the Great Danes' standing as a perennial America East powerhouse. Her tenure was highlighted by the 2022 America East Tournament Championship and subsequent NCAA Tournament berth, alongside two America East Regular Season Titles in 2022-23 and 2024-25. The 2025 America East Coach of the Year, Mullen led the program to four consecutive 20-win seasons from 2021-22 to 2024-25.

"It is incredibly difficult to put into words what these past eight years at UAlbany have meant to me and my family," said Mullen. "The fans and the Albany community as a whole have made my experience truly special. I am grateful to the campus leadership and the entire administration for their belief in my vision, and for their unwavering support. It has been an honor to coach such dedicated and talented young women, and I will always cherish the relationships that we formed and the impact they had on me. The success of this program goes far beyond wins and losses, and I am thankful for everything UAlbany has given me."

The University at Albany will launch a national search for the program's next head coach effective immediately.
