Four Great Danes Named Academic All-District

GREENWOOD, Ind. - Four Great Danes from the UAlbany women's basketball team were named CSC Academic All-District, the organization announced Tuesday.

The 2022-23 Academic All-District Team, selected by members of College Sports Communicators (CSC) (formerly known as CoSIDA), recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes basketball honorees in four divisions - NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA. Those named to the Academic All-District teams advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. The honorees will be announced in March.

Graduate student Ellen Hahne, senior Grace Heeps, redshirt-junior Morgan Haney, and sophomore Freja Werth have been named Academic All-District.

A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Hahne leads the team with 66 assists and 33 steals. Second on the team with 6.0 rebounds per game and third with 11.6 points per game, she currently ranks top-10 in the America East with both numbers, as well as assists and steals. Owning a 3.82 GPA in political science, she graduated with her bachelor's degree in May 2022. On track to complete her master's in international Affairs in December 2023, she currently holds a 3.77 GPA.

Leading the team in minutes per game (33.8), Heeps is a must-have on the court. Her leadership and direction are just part of the guard's performance on the court. Currently behind Hahne with 60 assists and 27 steals, she is the only Great Dane to compete for a full 40 minutes this season. Boasting a 3.95 GPA, the East Greenbush, N.Y. native is set to graduate in May 2023 with a degree in communication.

Battling injuries along the way, Haney currently leads the Great Danes with 1.4 steals per game. Last year's America East Sixth Player of the Year is currently tied for 11th in the league in steals per conference game. Graduating a year early, in May 2022, with a 3.90 GPA in business administration, she currently holds a 4.00 GPA while working on her MBA.

Finally, Freja Werth has been a staple on the UAlbany court. Stepping up when multiple players were out with injuries, she was essential as the Great Danes made their way through the non-conference schedule. Tallying five double-digit point games and one double-double this year, she currently ranks 12th in the America East with 1.6 offensive rebounds per game. After three full semesters at UAlbany, and three Dean's List nods, she currently holds a 3.98 GPA while studying sociology.
