ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany women's basketball program announced its America East schedule for the 2016-17 season. The schedule consists of 16 league games.
“We are very excited about the upcoming America East basketball schedule," said UAlbany Director of Athletics Mark Benson. "Great Danes fans can look forward to a strong non-conference schedule, which includes hosting the Albany Cup vs. Siena for the first time, followed by our pursuit of another trip to the NCAA tournament. It's a perfect time to buy season tickets for Great Danes basketball."
Last year, the Great Danes won an unprecedented fifth consecutive America East title. During that time, they have accumulated an in-conference record of 74-6. The team went on to earn its first ever NCAA Tournament victory, upsetting fifth-seed Florida 61-59. This year's team will try to keep the momentum going under the guidance of a new coaching staff, headed by head coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee.
The Great Danes opens conference play with two consecutive home games. They host UMass Lowell on Wednesday, January 4, and then Stony Brook on Saturday, January 7. The team will visit New Hampshire on Wednesday, January 11 before returning home to host UMBC on Monday, January 16.
Next, the Great Danes embark on their first of three in-conference two-game road trips, starting on Thursday, January 19 at Binghamton. Next, the team visits Maine for a rematch of the 2016 America East championship game on Sunday, January 22.
After visiting Maine, the Great Danes will host Vermont on Wednesday, January 25, and then host another home game against Hartford on Saturday, January 28. The team will head back out on the road for their next two games, at which point the Danes will play their second of two scheduled games against each conference opponent. On Wednesday, February 1, the team will visit UMass Lowell, followed by a trip to Stony Brook on Saturday, February 4.
Returning home, the team will host New Hampshire on Monday, February 6 and then Binghamton on Wednesday, February 9. Afterwards, UAlbany will have its longest layoff between games during the conference schedule, not playing again until a visit to UMBC on Wednesday, February 15.
UAlbany wraps up its home conference schedule hosting Maine on Saturday, February 18, before ending the conference schedule on the road at Vermont on Thursday, February 23 and at Hartford on Sunday, February 26.
The 2017 America East Tournament will be held in Portland, Maine at the Cross Insurance Arena. The quarterfinals and semifinals run from Saturday, March 4 through Sunday, March 5. The 2017 America East championship game will be held on Friday, March 10 at the highest remaining seed.
