Old Westbury, N.Y. - Four homeruns in the first game
on Sunday led UAlbany to a 16-4 win, while the Great Danes posted a 6-4 victory in the second half of
the double header, as the Great Danes took three out of four in a weekend series with New York Tech
(2-7) in non-conference baseball action. UAlbany (4-7) won Saturday's seven-inning tilt, 6-5, before
falling, 7-6, in the nightcap.
Josh Nethaway went 4-for-4 with two runs
scored in Saturday's first-game win. Freshman Craig Lepre, who started behind the plate for the Great
Danes, recorded three hits, scoring one run while driving in two more. Pete DiResta added an RBI
double to help lead UAlbany to the come-from-behind win. Ryan White earned his first win of the
season on the mound, as he threw the final two innings. White did not allow a hit and striking out
three. Starter Zach Kraham went five and a third innings on the mound, fanning four opposing
batters.
In the second game, DiResta and Mike Tirri
combined for four of UAlbany's six hits, including a double from Tirri. Freshman hurler Cameron Sorgie
went four and two thirds innings in the loss, striking out three batters. Travis Wilson threw the final
three and a third frames, also fanning three batters.
In Sunday's early game, DiResta and Tirri's
bats stayed hot, as they both smashed home runs for the Great Danes. D.J. Hoagboon and Joey Tracy
also drove balls out of the park, accounting for two more of UAlbany's 16 hits in the game. UAlbany
broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the fourth, as the Great Danes racked up seven runs in the frame. With
two in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth, UAlbany posted another two in the final frame to
total 16 runs. NYIT put up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too late for a rally, as
UAlbany secured the win.
Sean Lucas improved to 1-1 on the season, as
he fanned nine NYIT batters in six innings of work. Mike Baltera sealed up the win for the Great Danes
with two strikeouts in the final inning.
Nethaway put up two hits in the final game of
the series, while Vincent Martorelli recorded a two-RBI single in the second which gave UAlbany a 3-0
lead early. Gordon Madej, who earned the America East Conference Rookie of the Week award during
the first week of the season, also finished with two hits, and sent one run home. Starter Kasceim
Graham went five full innings on the mound, scattering six hits and striking out three to earn the win.
Joey Moore came in for the final four innings, while also fanning three opposing batters.
UAlbany will continue the non-conference
schedule on Wednesday, visiting Central Connecticut State for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
