Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team completed their season in the America East Tournament with an 11-5 loss to Maine on Wednesday evening.
Key Stats:
Head Coach Jon Mueller: "We had some miscues in the middle that cost us a big inning. Overall, proud of the senior group. They finish with three consecutive tournament appearances and represented the university in the classroom, in the community, and on the field tremendously."
How it Happened:
- Maine struck first in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly from Hunter St. Denis to take a 1-0 lead.
- The Great Danes answered in the second inning. John Vitucci walked and stole second before Luke Filippi brought him home with an RBI single. Later in the frame, Michael Maggio lined a two-RBI single to center to give UAlbany a 3-1 advantage.
- Maine responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning. After plating one on a sacrifice bunt, Nic Pepe launched a three-run home run to left field to put the Black Bears back in front 5-3.
- Albert De La Rosa added a solo home run in the third inning to extend the Maine lead to 6-3.
- UAlbany cut into the deficit in the fourth. Cooper Loyal doubled before Michael Maggio drove in a run on a groundout. Patrick DeSarno followed with an RBI single through the left side to make it 6-5.
- The Black Bears pulled away in the sixth inning with five runs on six hits. Nic Pepe delivered an RBI single before Juju Stevens added a two-RBI single. Quinn Murphy capped the inning with a two-RBI double down the right field line to extend the lead to 11-5.
- Matthew Mariano entered in relief and tossed 2.1 scoreless innings to keep Maine off the board for the remainder of the game.
- UAlbany was unable to rally late as Maine secured the tournament-opening victory.
