UAlbany Sweeps NYIT in Non-Conference DH; Hoagboon & DiResta Belt Home Runs

Old Westbury, N.Y. -  UAlbany swept NYIT in a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at President's Field. The Great Danes won the first game 8-2 and took the second game 3-1. NYIT will look to prevent the sweep in the third and final game of the series on Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m.

For the day, UAlbany's Nolan Gaige went 4-for-5 with three runs and two doubles, while Pete DiResta batted .500 with three runs, including, a double and a home run, picking up two RBI. On the mound, Dave Kubiak and Kasciem Graham earned the wins. Kubiak threw a complete seven-inning game, striking out five while issuing just one walk. Graham tossed the final six innings of game two, striking out four without allowing an earned run.

For NYIT, junior Ryan Campbell batted 2-for-5, while senior George Carroll hit is first home run of the season and collected two RBI. On the mound, Preston Wasmund and John Duggan were dealt the losses. 

Game 1 • Albany 8, NYIT 2 (7 innings)

The Great Danes led 3-0 by the fifth inning, as they scored single runs in the first, third and fifth. The Bears made it a one-run game as catcher Carroll drove his two-run homer over the right field wall, scoring Eric Cos. The score remained 3-2 until the top of the seventh inning, when UAlbany rallied for five runs to set the final score at 8-2. D.J. Hoagboon smashed a 3-run homer in the final inning.

Game 2 • Albany 3, NYIT 1 (7 innings)

The Great Danes got on board in the first inning as DiResta hit a solo home run to right centerfield. UAlbany then tacked on two more runs in the top of the third. Gaige, who recorded a double early in the inning, was driven home on an RBI single by Brian Bullard, while DiResta later scored on a fielder's choice. Effrey Valdez prevented the shutout as he plated Rob Cafiero who reached on an error in the bottom of the third.
