Iowa City, Iowa - Jaime Printy led three players in double digits with a team-high 16 points, leading Iowa to an 82-60 win over UAlbany in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Hawkeyes scored their first four points of the game from the charity stripe, taking a 4-2 advantage on two free throws apiece by Printy and Kamille Wahlin. UAlbany got its first two baskets from forward Julie Forster, who also grabbed three of the Great Danes' four rebounds in the first four minutes of play. After the first media timeout, Forster recorded a conventional three-point play, while Ebone Henry followed with the same, tying the game at 10-10.
The Great Danes tied the game again at 23-23 on back-to-back baskets by Forster, but Iowa scored the next eight points to pull ahead, 31-23, with 2:35 left in the first half. Kelly Krei drained a three from the far side of the court to give the Hawkeyes their first double-digit lead of the half at 2:03, and Printy hit a free throw after being fouled on a made basket to put Iowa ahead, 37-23, at the half. UAlbany went scoreless in the final 5:08 of the first half.
Iowa continued to roll in the second half, getting three points from Morgan Johnson in the first two and a half minutes of play. The Hawkeyes continued their run with a 3-pointer by Printy, pulling ahead, 44-25, with just over 17 minutes on the clock. Cyndra Couch scored six of UAlbany's next 13 points, pulling the Great Danes to within ten, 48-38, with 12:27 left to play. However, Iowa continued to build its advantage, and with Krei's third 3-pointer of the game, pulled ahead by 19, 70-51, with 4:43 on the clock.
Iowa (2-1) took a 76-55 advantage with just over two minutes left to play on a lay-in by Bethany Doolittle, and UAlbany was unable to climb back, despite a late 3-pointer by Henry. The Hawkeyes, who shot 49.1-percent from the floor, went 7-of-12 from 3-point range and hit 23 of 27 free throws, led by Printy's 9-for-9 performance. Krei finished with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Johnson was the final Hawkeye in double-figures scoring with 12 points.
Henry led all players with 17 points, while Forster recorded her second straight double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for UAlbany. Tabitha Makopondo came off the bench for the Great Danes to grab six rebounds and recorded two blocks, two steals and two assists. UAlbany was held to 34.8-percent shooting in the game, including just 22.2 percent from long range.
UAlbany (2-1) will return to action on Saturday, visiting Brown in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
