Lincroft, N.J. ? Laura Cummings won the individual title for the second consecutive year to lead UAlbany to a first-place finish in the team standings at the Monmouth Kick-off Classic on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Thompson Park. The Great Danes, who were competing for the first time this season in men's and women's cross country, also edge Temple by four points to place first in the men's race.
Cummings, a senior from Bay Shore, N.Y., ran the 4,000-meter course in 14:36, as her team finished three points ahead of Monmouth. Freshman Emily Fung took fifth in 15:08, while Laine Sefick was sixth in 15:22. Ada Lauterbach hit the line in seventh place with a time of 15:28.
The Great Danes had three freshman runners record top-10 finishes in scoring a winning total of 40 points. Temple's Travis Mahoney was the men's individual champion, as he covered the 6,000-meter layout in 19:23. UAlbany's Jack Kelley and R.J. Sniffen (Shaker) ended up in fourth and fifth, respectively. Kelley, an honorable mention all-state competitor on the scholastic level, posted a time of 19:47, while Sniffen was six seconds behind.
Chris Manico, a member of the 2007 Suburban Council championship team at Shaker High School, went 20:06 to take the ninth position. David Rothman placed 12th overall, as the Great Danes improved upon last year's runner-up finish in this same meet.
