Two Top 10 Women’s Finishers Highlight Hopkinton Festival

SHORT STORY: Both the men and the women finished second as a team at the Hopkinton Festival, Friday afternoon.
 
KEY NOTES
  • This was the first time each runner competed at the Hopkinton Fairgrounds.
  • Freshmen Arianna Verardi and Owen Stachlik led their respective teams for the third time in as many races.
  • Senior Hannah Steiner collected her first career top-10 finish.
  • UAlbany's top three men's racers finished within 40 milliseconds of each other.
  • The women's scoring gap was 1:21.08. The men's scoring gap was 17.61 seconds.
  • As a team, the Adelphi women finished first with 42 points. The Babson men finished first with 39 points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The women started the day for collegiate runners.
  • Arianna Verardi earned the highest finish of all UAlbany runners with the fourth-best women's time. The freshman finished the 5k in 19:36.44.
  • Senior Hannah Steiner made it two in the top 10 with a 20:17.4-5000m and 10th place.
  • Freshman Aiva Pinches finished third on the team for the second time this season just two places behind Steiner (12th, 20:27.07). 
  • Sophomore Cara Mastan remained in the top five for her second consecutive race with a top-15 finish (15th, 20:42.34).
  • Graduate student Jaymee Yelton (23rd, 20:57.52) rounded out the scorers for the women.
  • The men closed out the collegiate competition.
  • Owen Stachlik led the men's pack of runners when he finished the 8k in 25:59.46 for 13th place.
  • Junior Nikolas Christian (16th) and sophomore Devin Finn (17th) finished back-to-back within a millisecond of each other (25:59.85 & 25:59.86). Sophomore Jerry Lewis made it three Great Danes in a row with a 17th-place finish in 26:06.89.
  • Graduate student Gabriel Spanbauer rounded out the UAlbany scorers in 22nd place (26:17.07).
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will head to the ECAC/IC4A Championships in one short week. The regional competition will take place at the Van Cortlandt Park in New York City on Friday, October 17.
