SHORT STORY: The Great Danes completed their final race before the America East Championship, Friday afternoon.
KEY NOTES
- Four Great Danes, including two women and two men, ran their first collegiate race at Van Cortlandt Park.
- Both senior women - Hannah Steiner and Bonnieta Supaul - improved their time from their last 6k at Van Cortlandt Park in October 2023. Steiner shaved nearly a minute off her time (55 seconds) and Supaul improved by over a minute (88 seconds).
- All returning men were able to improve their time from their last competition at Van Cortlandt Park.
- Sophomores Jerry Lewis (3:08.2) and Devin Finn (3:46.4) saw the most improvement while junior Isaac Graber and redshirt-senior Steve Hines worked for their 8k time to be over a minute faster.
- Junior Nikolas Christian improved his time by 2.3 seconds.
- The women's scoring gap was 3:15.0.
- The men's scoring gap was 1:10.2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The women began the championship races with a 10:45 am start.
- Freshman Arianna Verardi once again led the Great Danes with a 6k slightly over 23 minutes (23:16.6, 117th place).
- Hannah Steiner (24:22.9, 176th), sophomore Cara Mastan (24:46.3, 188th), and freshman Aiva Pinches (24:55.8, 195th) finished within 33 seconds of each other.
- Graduate student Jaymee Yelton rounded out the scorers for the women (26:31.5, 216th).
- The men began the IC4A championship at 11:30 am.
- Nikolas Christian and Jerry Lewis finished first and second, respectively, for UAlbany with a top-100 finish, the only two of the day. Christian finished the 8000m race in 26:05.6 while Lewis completed it in 26:12.4.
- Gabriel Spanbauer finished middle of the pack with a 26:49.4 time.
- Isaac Graber (27:14.9, 183rd) and Shane LaFountain (27:15.7, 185th) rounded out the Great Dane scorers. Devin Finn finished just outside the top five in 27:19.2 in 188th place.
NEXT: The Great Danes will take two weeks to prepare for the America East Championship. Set to be competed at the Hopkinton Fairgrounds, New Hampshire will host the 2025 competition on October 31.
