Road to Eugene
The final stop before nationals came on May 22-25, at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships in Lexington, KY. A top-12 finish was the standard for any athlete looking to punch their ticket to Eugene. Finishing in 8th place in the hammer throw, Campos becomes the first female athlete in the event to qualify for the national competition in school history. Her 205-06 throw broke her own school record in the event. The graduate student from Mount Vernon, N.Y. also becomes the Dominican Republic national record holder with the day's mark.
In the high jump, Benjamin cleared 5-11-0.25 to put her in 11th place. The jump also marked a personal best, freshman, and all-class school record. The freshman from Ellenville, N.Y. also becomes the first female high jumper in school history to qualify for the national competition.
Tracktown, U.S.A.
This year's NCAA championships are to be held at the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR. The world-famous Hayward Field is a staple in the professional and collegiate track and field world. While the NCAA Championships haven't visited Eugene since 2022, the facility was home to the World Athletics Championships in the same year. Hosting professional athletes from around the world is nothing new for Tracktown, as it is frequently the location for the U.S. Olympic Trials, USATF National Championships, and the world-class Pre Classic, a diamond league event.
