SHORT STORY: Zosia Szczotkiewicz tallied a double-double and Elisavet Papageorgiou recorded a career-high in kills in the Great Danes' match at LIU, Tuesday.
 
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "It was tough getting going today. We were a step slow in a lot of areas tonight. I'm very proud of Eli [Papageorgiou] and the way she stepped up offensively tonight. She really tried to put the team on her back and did an excellent job there."
 
KEY STATS
  • Senior Zosia Szczotkiewicz led the Great Danes with 16 assists and 12 digs in two sets.
  • Freshman Maria Olga Siapani added 10 assists in two sets played.
  • Graduate student Elisavet Papageorgiou tallied a career-high 15 kills while redshirt-junior Kendall Harris led with two blocks.
  • As a team, UAlbany held the advantage in kills, 41-39, and assists, 36-32, while LIU out-blocked the Great Danes, 9-4.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • LIU got out to an early 8-2 lead but UAlbany responded with five consecutive points to put the first set within one point.
  • After two four-point scoring runs, the Sharks led 19-12.
  • Despite closing out the first set with back-and-forth action, LIU maintained its lead for the 25-18 win.
  • The Great Danes flipped the script in the beginning of the second set and held an early 4-2 lead. Adding four consecutive points, including kills from Kendall Harris and Elisavet Papageorgiou, UAlbany held an 8-5 advantage.
  • After going back and forth, the Sharks gained a 19-16 lead with a 6-1 scoring run.
  • UAlbany tied the set at 19 but a 6-1 scoring run from LIU ended the set, 25-20, in the Sharks' favor.
  • In the third set, LIU worked for an 11-4 lead.
  • After going back and forth and maintaining the point differential, the Great Danes tied the score at 20. Five consecutive kills, including three-straight from Papageorgiou, ended a 7-0 scoring run from UAlbany.
  • UAlbany added a point but it was LIU coming away with the third-set win, 25-21, to take the match, 3-0.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes are set to host NJIT for Senior Night on Friday, November 6 at 6 pm.
