Tschantret ’91 Named 2023 Hall of Fame Veteran Ballot Semifinalist

FRISCO, Texas – The National Soccer Hall of Fame has announced 25 semifinalists for the 2023 Veteran's Ballot.  On the prestigious list, among additional American soccer greats like Taylor Twellman and Aly Wagner, is former University at Albany men's soccer player Lee Tschantret.

Tschantret played at UAlbany from 1987-90.  He scored 51 goals in his career, a mark that still stands as UAlbany's all-time program record.  During his career, Tschantret earned All-America honors twice, in 1988 and 1989.

Following his collegiate career, Tschantret played professionally for nearly 20 seasons, starting in 1991 with 20 appearances for the Albany Capitals and ending in 2009 with a second stint with Philadelphia KiXX.  His professional career brought him to stops in Italy and Greece, and, in total, he has won four indoor soccer titles, three with the Baltimore Blast of the MISL and one with the Kansas City Attack of the NPSL.  Finally, Tschantret was the 14th player in MISL history to score 1,000 points in his career.

Tschantret played internationally for the American National Futsal Team for 10 years, during which time he won a CONCACAF gold medal and participated in the Futsal World Cup.  He additionally served as team captain during the 2007 Pan Am Olympic Games.

Tschantret, an Albany, N.Y. native, is currently the varsity head coach for Loyola Blakefield in Towson, Md., and has previously coached as an assistant on the U18 National Team for the United States.  Loyola has qualified for the playoffs in each season during Tschantret's tenure and has won Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association titles in 2012 and 2014.

The 25 semifinalists were selected from an original list of 89 candidates.  Semifinalists will be winnowed to a group of 10 finalists, to be selected by the nine-member Screening Committee.  Ultimately, up to two inductees will be designated by the 24-member Veteran Voting Committee.
