Baseball Announces 2022 Captains

ALBANY, N.Y.  –  The University at Albany baseball program has announced five captains for the upcoming season. Ray Weber, Brad Malm, Will Feil, Johnny Marti, and John Daly will lead the Great Danes in 2022.
 
"These guys all exemplify what we're looking for in captains," said Head Coach Jon Mueller. "They are tremendous in the classroom, they've shown great leadership qualities, and they've had an immediate and profound impact on our younger guys."
 
Ray Weber
Redshirt Senior | RHP | West Islip, N.Y.
Weber, a redshirt senior right-handed pitcher from West Islip, N.Y., was an important contributor on the mound for UAlbany in the 2021 campaign. Weber made 13 appearances for the Great Danes, leading the team with a 3.69 ERA while recording 46 strikeouts and 35 walks in 83.0 innings pitched. He earned America East All-Conference Second Team honors for the second time in his career.

John Daly
Redshirt Senior | Outfielder | Sparkill, N.Y.
Daly, a redshirt senior from Sparkill, N.Y., had a strong campaign on defense for the Great Danes in 2021 from the outfield. Daly appeared in all 47 games, batting .248 and racking up four doubles, three triples, three home runs, 22 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases. The outfielder ranked eighth in walks and ninth in stolen bases in the America East this past season.
 
"I'm humbled to be named a captain for the UAlbany baseball team. I want to thank my coaches and teammates for putting this trust in me. This team has become a family to me over the past three years. I'm excited for the season to get underway and the opportunity to lead our team to a conference championship. Go Danes!"
 
Brad Malm
Redshirt Senior | Infielder | Medford, N.Y.
Malm, a redshirt senior infielder, had an outstanding 2021 season for the Great Danes. The infielder started all 47 games for UAlbany, boasting a .345 batting average with 21 doubles, one triple, four home runs, and 39 RBIs. The Medford, N.Y., native led the America East in total hits and doubles, ranked fifth in RBIs, and sixth in batting average. Malm received All-Tournament, All-Conference First Team, and All-Academic honors from the America East – also collecting Player of the Week awards twice throughout the year.
 
"This is my third year being a captain and it is always a great honor and lots of responsibility. Thank you to my coaches and teammates for putting trust in me as I try to push the team to get better every single day. We have an outstanding group of guys this year and I am really looking forward to competing with them the next couple months."
 
Johnny Marti
Redshirt Senior | Infielder | Saint James, N.Y.
Marti, a redshirt senior infielder from Saint James, N.Y. was one of only two players who started all 47 games for UAlbany. Marti led the Great Danes with a .349 batting average, four triples, seven home runs, and 41 RBIs. The infielder ranked second in the America East in total hits and RBIs, and fourth in batting average, slugging percentage, and runs scored. He was tabbed to the America East All-Conference First Team and received Player of the Week honors once.
 
"I couldn't be more humbled by my teammates' and coaches' decision to make me captain. Since I was a freshman, the idea of leading a team was a goal of mine and it means a lot to make that come true. These guys are family to me and knowing that they believe in me is a greater compliment than I've ever received in my life. This is our year. Go Danes!"
 
Will Feil
Redshirt Junior | Infielder | East Williston, N.Y.
Feil, a redshirt junior infielder, made 37 appearances with 34 starts for UAlbany in 2021. Feil ranked sixth in the America East with 24 walks. The East Williston, New York native achieved a .226 batting average, racking up three home runs and 14 RBIs.
 
"I'm honored to be recognized by my fellow teammates and coaches as a captain of the UAlbany baseball team. I'm excited for the opportunity to help lead this team towards our one common goal: A conference championship."
