ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany's women's golf team will open their spring competition schedule with a two-day tournament, the Columbia Classic, beginning on Saturday, February 12.
The Columbia Classic will take place at the Duran Golf Club in Viera, Florida on Sunday, February 13, and Monday, February 14. The Lions are set to host 15 teams, UAlbany, Boston U., Columbia, Dartmouth, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa State, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Princeton, Purdue, Texas Tech, Tulsa, Virginia Tech, and Yale. The event is set to begin with a shotgun start at 8:15 am on Sunday and will feature three rounds for a total of 54 holes.
GREAT DANE REWIND
- The Great Danes opened their fall competition schedule by hosting the Crosstown Challenge on September 12th, where they finished first with 308 strokes.
- On September 20-21, UAlbany tee'd off at the Boston College Intercollegiate, placing ninth, out of fifteen teams, with sophomore Amber Thornton leading the way at +16 (232).
- UAlbany competed at the Princeton University Invite on September 25-26, where they placed fifth and Thornton captured an individual win.
- The Great Danes saw another fifth-place finish at the Sacred Heart Fall Invite with Thorton leading the way in a three-way tie for 10th and freshman Claudia Blöchliger in a two-way tie for 13th.
- To close out their fall competition schedule, UAlbany finished second at the St. John's Fall Intercollegiate, this time with sophomore Katelin Richards as the top finisher for the Great Danes.
- During the fall competition season, Thornton golfed her way to earn both September and October's MAAC Golfer of the Month awards, marking her third career MAAC award. The second-year broke the 18-hole record by two strokes and tied the 36-hole record at the Princeton Invitational, earning a 66 (-6) in the second round. On day two, she tallied the 54-hole record by 10 strokes, good enough for a first-place finish.
- Blöchliger opened her fall season with a second-place finish at the Crosstown Challenge with a 76 (+6). In Boston, Blöchliger totaled five birdies, four of which happened in the third round, marking the first full tournament of her collegiate career.
- Senior Pasqualina Tartaglione proved to be a consistent contributor to the team, earning a sixth-place finish for the Great Danes at the Crosstown Challenge with a score of 81. At the Boston College Intercollegiate, Tartaglione earned two birdies, during the first and third rounds with a round-low of 78 (+6) in the first round. She was the team's second finisher at the Princeton Invitational, finishing in a four-way tie for 23rd, tallying nine birdies over three rounds.
- Katelin Richards set a new UAlbany single-round record, hitting seven birdies, five in a row, in the first round of the St. John's Invitational. Her performance was good enough for a third-place finish, leading the Great Danes. At the Boston College Intercollegiate, Richard's day one rounds contributed to the overall team score, including her five birdies.
- Golfers Mariel Tee, Madison Walker, and Maddie Campos each contributed to the total team score throughout the fall. Tee's singular birdie and day two score at the Boston College Intercollegiate helped to bring the team to their ninth-place finish. Walker had an impressive run at the Princeton Invitational, improving 21 spots after her third round to finish 27th (226), contributing to the team's total in all three rounds. Sophomore Maddie Campos competed her way to an 11th place finish at the Crosstown Challenge with a score of 88.
NEXT: The UAlbany women's golf team will return to Florida to compete in the Spring Break Shootout on March 14 and 15.
