Men’s Track & Field Sweeps America East Weekly Awards

BOSTON – A new school record in the sport's most prestigious event highlighted UAlbany track & field's second weekend of the 2021 outdoor season, spurring the Great Danes to sweep the two men's America East Performer of the Week awards.  Shak Williams was named for Men's Track and Adrian Mitchell for Men's Field.

Williams, a freshman from St. Andrew, Jamaica, won the men's 100m dash at the Virginia Invitational last weekend.  Williams' finishing time of 10.52 seconds set a new program and freshman record.  He surpassed the previous program record of 10.54 set twice in 2019 by teammate Garfield Napier.  The time also surpassed the previous freshman record of 10.68 set in 2006 by Patrick Weider.  Finally, Williams' time surpassed the all-conditions freshman record of a wind-aided 10.59 set in 2014 by Robert Harris III.

Williams also placed 10th in the men's 200m in 21.96.  He further ran a leg on UAlbany's 4x100m relay that crossed the line in a school-record time but was disqualified.

Mitchell, a graduate student from Kingston, Jamaica, won the men's javelin with a mark of 218-08.00.  Mitchell, who ranks second in the event in program history, has competed just twice for UAlbany since May of 2018.  His mark from the weekend is the sixth-best in his career, and Mitchell pulls in his fifth career America East weekly award.

UAlbany competes Friday and Saturday at UConn's Dog Fight.
