Short Story: The University at Albany softball team fell in a tight rubber game with America East foe UMBC. The game proved to be a pitcher's duel between UAlbany's
Wendi Hammond and UMBC's Courtney Coppersmith. Both pitchers went the distance, with Coppersmith allowing one run on one hit and Hammond allowing three runs on six hits.
Coach Chris Cannata: "We played a good game today and had quality at-bats against a tough pitcher. We got the pitching performance we needed from Wendi. It was a tough game that could've gone either way."
Key Stats:
- Hammond started in the circle for UAlbany, tossing a great game. The sophomore from Chemung, N.Y., pitched all seven innings for UAlbany, allowing just three runs on six hits with one walk. She fanned seven batters throughout the day.
- Madison Petrella notched the only hit of the afternoon for the Great Danes. The catcher sent one deep over the center field fence in the second inning, her fifth homerun of the year.
- Katie Falotico was hit three times throughout the day, not recording at at-bat as a result.
- Petrella and Caitlyn Mitros both logged one walk each, rounding out the UAlbany base runners.
How it Happened:
- UMBC was able to strike first after a leadoff triple, brought in the next at-bat on a single from Keffler. The Retrievers were able to load the bases, but Hammond was able to work out of the jam to allow only the one run.
- Petrella sent one deep over the center field wall in the second to knot the game at one run each. Petrella's longball would be the lone hit for the Great Danes all afternoon.
- UMBC was able to re-take the lead in the fifth inning. Wilson hit the ball up the middle with the bases loaded. Garrett, at second, was able to stop the ball and tag the base to force an out, but two runs were able to score for the Retrievers in the process.
Next: UAlbany's doubleheader with Holy Cross this Wednesday has officially been postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the Holy Cross program. The Great Danes return to action next weekend when they host Hartford for a three-game series.
