Short Story: The University at Albany softball team took down Holy Cross in today's lone game by a final score of 9-4. The Great Danes received a strong relief appearance from Wendi Hammond, who tossed five innings and allowed just one run. On the offensive side, Lové Drumgole led the way for UAlbany with three hits and three RBIs. The second game of today's doubleheader was called off due to rain.

Coach Chris Cannata: "We were lucky to dodge the rain today and get one game in. It was important for us to get some quality work in going into the weekend. I was happy with our at-bats today, and Wendi had another strong performance."

Key Stats:
  • Briana Garrett started in the circle for UAlbany, tossing two innings. Hammond threw the remaining five, allowing just one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
  • Drumgole led the offense with three hits and three RBIs. Kelly Barkevich joined her with multiple hits, collecting two along with an RBI off of a solo homerun.
  • Six of the Great Danes' nine hits went for extra bases. Madison Petrella, Schuyler Ossman and Drumgole (2) all collected doubles, while Morgan Petty flashed her wheels with a triple and Barkevich hit one over the fence.
  • Petty and Petrella joined Drumgole with multiple RBIs, both collecting two.
How it Happened:
  • Drumgole got the Great Danes on the board first in the second inning, sending one down the left field line to drive in two runs on a double.
  • The Crusaders returned the favor in the bottom half of the inning, with Yurchick homering to left to tie the game up at two runs apiece.
  • Holy Cross would take the lead in the third after Chavez scored on a wild pitch.
  • UAlbany took the lead back, for good, in the fourth inning. Barkevich hit a longball over the fence in right to tie things up before Drumgole notched her second double of the afternoon, scoring Hammond to take a 4-3 lead.
  • Petty continued the trend of extra-base hits, this time in the fifth. She tripled to right center to score Falotico and put UAlbany up two runs. Hammond hit a sac fly later in the inning to score Petty.
  • UAlbany tacked on three more runs in the sixth. Petty's name again appeared in the box score, hitting a sac fly with the bases loaded to drive in another run. The rest was left to Petrella, who doubled to right center to clear the rest of the bases and put the Great Danes up 9-3.
  • Holy cross was ablew to score once more in the final frame, grabbing a run off of a single from Bates.
Next: UAlbany's series against Hartford has been moved up due to inclement weather in the forecast. Game one of the three-game series will now be played on Friday at 2:00 p.m., with Saturday's doubleheader remaining the same.
