Short Story: The University at Albany softball team survived a marathon game at Albany Field, winning in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the twelfth inning. The Great Danes got the job done on the back of pitcher Wendi Hammond, who tossed the entire game without allowing a single run. Chloe Lewis finished the game with a hit up the middle to score the runner from second, sending the Great Danes home with a win in the first game of a three-game series.

Head Coach Chris Cannata: "Today was a great game that could've gone either way. We got another fantastic pitching performance and this time it went our way. We will have to be better on the offensive side tomorrow to take this series."

Key Stats:
  • Hammond went 12 strong innings of shutout ball. The sophomore from Chemung, N.Y., didn't allow a single run and gave up just four hits in the process. She racked up seven strikeouts and walked just one batter.
  • Lewis played the hero in the bottom of the twelfth inning, hitting a ball up the middle to score Caitlyn Mitros from second base and end the marathon game.
  • Lewis and Mitros were the only UAlbany batters to collect multiple hits, two each.
  • Lewis had a very busy day at first, finishing with a game-high 19 putouts.
  • The Great Danes out-hit the Hawks 9-4.
  • Caylee English pitched 8.1 innings of shutout ball for the Hawks, giving up just five hits. She was replaced in the eighth by Lauren Card, who pitched the final 3.1 innings and allowed four hits and the winning run.
How it Happened:
  • The lone run in 12 innings of play came in the bottom of the twelfth inning. Lewis was able to hit one up the middle through the infield, scoring Mitros from second base.
