Softball Takes Two in First Home Games of 2021

Short Story: The University at Albany softball team played at home for the first time in 2021, grabbing both games of a doubleheader against Colgate. The matchup served as a rematch from the day before, where the Raiders swept the Great Danes. The UAlbany bats came alive in the wins, scoring 11 runs in game one and 10 in game two.

Coach Chris Cannata: "We took a step forward today. We got some big hits with runners on base, and our pitchers worked hard in each game to give us a chance to win."

  • Jimenez led the team with three hits.
  • Alexis Phillips, Falotico, and Petrella all knocked in two RBIs.
  • Phillips was a pitcher's nightmare, drawing two walks and stealing two bases while also accounting for two of UAlbany's runs.
  • Jimenez and Petrella were the busiest in the field, collecting seven and six putouts, respectively.
  • Wendi Hammond pitched all six innings, allowing only four earned runs on four hits.
How it Happened Game One:
  • Colgate struck first on a sac fly from Steph Jacoby in the first inning.
  • The Raiders added three more runs in the second, increasing the lead to 5-0. Morgan Farrah reached on an UAlbany error, collecting an RBI. Mia Guevarra then fouled out to left, deep enough to drive in another run. Colgate's final score of the inning came off an RBI single to the left side from Jacoby.
  • The Great Danes went to work in the third, first scoring off an RBI walk from Petrella before Barkevich drove in two more off a single up the middle, cutting Colgate's lead to 5-3.
  • UAlbany was able take an 11-5 lead in the fourth after scoring eight runs. Falotico started the big inning by blasting a three-run shot to right, scoringPhillips and Caitlyn Mitros. The next three UAlbany runs came off RBI singles from Petrella and Barkevich and an RBI double from Love Drumgole. The final two runs of the inning were scored after Mitros singled up the middle, scoring Drumgole and Barkevich.
  • Colgate responded in the sixth with a three-run homerun of their own off the bat of Jacoby. The Raiders were able to add another run in the seventh, making the final score 11-9.
How it Happened Game Two:
  • The Great Danes used a monster first inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Doubles starting the scoring, with Falotico and Petty both notching an RBI each with their extra base hits. Petrella followed that up with a two-run shot to increase the lead to four. Phillips then collected an RBI on a walk, with another run scoring on an error.
  • Phillips added another RBI in the third inning on a fielder's choice, pushing the lead to 7-0 UAlbany.
  • The Raiders were able to get on the board the next inning, with Farrah hitting a two-run homerun.
  • In the fifth, Colgate's Guevarra singled in a run in the top of the inning before UAlbany's Falotico doubled in a run in the bottom half to make the score 8-3
  • Colgate added their final run of the afternoon in the sixth via a walk from Virginia Irby.
  • UAlbany added two more runs of support in the bottom of the sixth off of a fielder's choice, put in play by Tara Driver, before a single from Drumgole put the Great Danes up 10-4.
Next: UAlbany returns to action on Wednesday, March 24 when the Great Danes host Rhode Island for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
