ALBANY, N.Y. – A week after playing in its first-ever NCAA tournament game, the University at Albany men's soccer program (13-5-2) will play a Sweet 16 matchup with the Clemson Tigers at their historic Riggs Field on Sunday.
UAlbany drew the #14 seed in the tournament, earning a bye into the second round. There, they hosted Boston College in a rematch of the regular season meeting where the Eagles defeated the Great Danes by a score of 5-3, despite UAlbany jumping out to a 2-0 lead before halftime. This time, UAlbany defeated Boston College 3-0, earning the right to advance in the tournament.
Clemson is ranked #3 in the national coaches' poll, and similarly drew the #3 seed for the NCAA tournament. In their second round game, the Tigers faced off against heated rival South Carolina. The Gamecocks struck first in the 73rd minute, and then the Tigers responded in the 85th. Three minutes into overtime, Clemson scored again to secure their spot in the next round.
Since the loss at Boston College on September 20, the Great Danes have gone 10-2-1 in thirteen games, outscoring their opponents 29-7. The streak includes wins over #3 Syracuse, two shutouts of Vermont, the America East Championship, and the program's first-ever NCAA tournament victory.
