Last Second Heroics By Callaway Lead UAlbany Women To 65-63 Win Over Umbc On The Road

Baltimore, Md. - Lindsey Lowrie led four players in double-digit scoring with a game-high 18 points, leading UAlbany to a 65-63 victory over UMBC in America East Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at RAC Arena. With the win, UAlbany holds onto second place in the league standings, improving to 14-9 overall and 8-2 in the conference.

The Great Danes jumped out to an early 6-2 lead behind back-to-back 3-pointers by Lowrie, and extended that advantage to seven, 12-5, on a jumper by Keyana Williams at 13:24. UMBC got consecutive baskets from Michelle Kurowski and Erin Brown, with Kurowski recording a steal to convert a fast-break layup, to cut the Retriever deficit to three at 11:42. The teams exchanged baskets over the next several minutes, with UAlbany's lead bouncing between three to six points, before Julie Forster put the Great Danes on top by seven, 25-18, with 6:09 left to play in the half.

Following Forster's layup, neither team would score another point until the 2:07 mark, when Raven Harris nailed a 3-pointer off an assist from Kim Browning. However, Lowrie responded at the other end of the court, taking a handoff from Cassandra Callaway to sink a long-range shot that kept UAlbany ahead by seven 28-21, with 1:46 to play. UMBC made a late run, as Raven Gerald drained two treys, including one at the buzzer, to pull the Retrievers to within one, 28-27, as the teams hit the locker room.

UMBC took its first lead of the game 17 seconds into the second half on a Brown layup. The teams played most of the second half similar to the first, as the Retrievers held onto a slight lead for most of the action. A series of free throw shots that were capped by two good buckets by Kurowski gave UMBC its largest lead of the night, 43-36, with just over 10 minutes left to play. Lowrie followed with another of her five 3-pointers on the night, to pull UAlbany back within four, but the Retrievers held onto a six-point advantage, 49-43, on a layup by Kristin Coles with 8:13 left to play.

Sarah Royals converted a conventional three-point play at 6:30 to close the gap to one, 50-49, but UMBC continued to battle, getting two shots from Harris at the charity stripe, followed by a Coles jumper to take the largets lead of the game, 58-49, with 4:14 left to play. Callaway nailed a 3-pointer to cut the lead back to six, and Ebone Henry dropped in two to pull the Great Danes to within four, 58-54, with 3:25 on the clock. Callaway made both of her shots from the free throw line to close the gap to two, but UMBC pulled away again, building up another six-point advantage on two Kurowski free throws with under a minute to go.

With 29 ticks remaining, Callaway nailed a 3-pointer to cut the UMBC lead to three, 63-60. The Retrievers turned over the ball and Callaway sunk another trey, with 22 seconds left to tie the game at 63-63. With 16 seconds left, UMBC committed another turnover, and Royals sprinted to the other end of the court to convert a layup with just nine seconds left. The Retrievers were unable to get another shot off, giving UAlbany the road victory.

Kurowski led UMBC with 17 points, as she went 6-for-10 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Tope Obajolu added 12 points for the Retrievers, while Coles chipped in with eight points and a team-high nine rebounds. As a team, UMBC (11-12, AE 5-5) shot 53.7-percent (22-41) from the floor.

Callaway and Forster both scored 11 points for UAlbany, while Forster pulled down five boards. Keyana Williams was the final Great Dane in double-digits, chipping in 10 points. The Great Danes shot 49.0-percent (25-51) from the floor, including an 8-of-16 performance from behind the 3-point arc.

UAlbany (14-9, AE 8-2) will return to action on Saturday, hosting Stony Brook at 4:30. The game is the first of the annual Big Purple Growl doubleheader.
