Bronx, N.Y. - Right fielder Rich Graef's two-run single in the fifth inning was the difference, as Massachusetts held off UAlbany, 4-2, in a non-league game played at Fordham University's Houlihan Park. The Great Danes will meet Fordham in a doubleheader on Sunday at 12 noon.
UAlbany (5-14) leaped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jeff Welsh walked and then came across when second baseman Brian Bullard belted a two-run homer, his first of the season, to right field.
Massachusetts (8-11) scored four times in the fifth to take the lead. With two outs and the bases loaded, center fielder Kyle Adie walked to score the first run. Tom Conley tied the contest at two apiece when he reached home on a wild pitch. Graef delivered the go-ahead runs with a single to center field.
The Great Danes threatened in both the eighth and ninth innings. Reliever Charlie Benson got of a bases-loaded jam when UAlbany's Josy Espinal hit into a double play. In the Great Danes' final at-bat, UAlbany had the tying runs aboard, but Leif Sorensen picked up his fourth save by striking out Pete DiResta to end the game.
UAlbany's Kyle Crean, a shortstop, and catcher D.J. Hoagboon each had two hits. UMass' starting pitcher Joe Popielarczyk picked up his first win of the spring by allowing five hits and striking out five over six innings of work.
