UAlbany Women's Basketball Falls to New Hampshire, 60-46, in America East Conference Play

Durham, N.H. - Cari Reed scored a game-high 19 points, including five 3-pointers to lead New Hampshire to a 60-46 win over UAlbany in America East Conference women's basketball action on Thursday evening at Lundholm Gymnasium.

UAlbany raced out to a 9-0 advantage after a lay-in by Tabatha Makopondo before the 16-minute media timeout. Kelsey Hogan ended the scoring drought for the Wildcats with a 3-pointer at 13:32, but UAlbany's Adrienne Jones responded with a jumper in the lane to keep the Great Danes ahead, 11-3. Melia Basavand drained a long-range trey from the top of the arc to put UAlbany up by 11, with 12:37 left to play. UNH cut the lead back to single digits at 9:16, as Cari Reed hit a 3-pointer from the left side of the court, pulling the Wildcats within 16-8. After Cassandra Callaway hit two free throws to put UAlbany ahead, 20-8, UNH went on a 10-0 run to pull within 20-18 with 3:17 left to play in the first half. The Great Danes ended the rally when Jones converted a conventional three-point play and Ebone Henry hit both ends of a one-and-one free throw opportunity for two of her 11 first-half points to set the halftime score at 25-18.

Reed got the Wildcats going in the second half, hitting two 3-pointers sandwiching a jumper by Julie Forster to pull UNH within 27-24 after a minute and half of play. New Hampshire pulled within 27-26 on a Kate Early jumper with 14:49 on the clock. The Wildcats took their first lead of the game, 29-27, on Reed's fourth 3-pointer of the game, forcing UAlbany to take a timeout with 12:58 left to play. The Great Danes came out of the timeout and Henry hit a running jumper in the lane to tie the game at 29-all.

Makopondo hit converted two layups and a free throw to give UAlbany a 34-31 advantage at 10:54, but UNH scored seven unanswered points to build up a 38-34 lead before Jones hit a shot in the paint to end the rally. However, Reed added four points to her total on back-to-back baskets to keep the Wildcats ahead, 40-36, with 7:24 on the clock, before Henry hit two free throws to pull the Great Danes back within two.

Sarah Frankenberger, who finished with nine points, nailed consecutive 3-pointers to put UNH up, 48-40, with just over four minutes on the clock. Kelsey Hogan hit two free throws to give the Wildcats their first double-digit lead at 50-40 just before the final media timeout of the game. A free throw by Henry and a jumper by Callaway cut the lead back to seven, but Reed, who was named the America East Player of the Game, dropped in three points to give New Hampshire its second 10-point advantage, but Callaway hit a trey from the top right-hand side of the arc to cut the Wildcat advantage to eight, 54-46, with 1:30 left to play. The Wildcats continued to roll on their home court, as Frankenberger and Hogan hit six-of-eight from the charity stripe in the final minute, setting the final score.

Henry, UAlbany's Player of the Game, scored 16 points for the Great Danes, while Jones added 11 points. Callaway chipped in with seven points and a team-high six rebounds. Hogan scored 13 points for New Hampshire (7-15, AE 4-6), while Denise Beliveau added nine points and a game-high seven boards.

UAlbany (12-10, AE 5-4) will return to action on Saturday, hosting Hartford at 4:30 p.m. for the first half of the Big Purple Growl.
