Tristan Akong Wins 60-Meter Dash; UAlbany Third at NYRR Collegiate Meet at the Armory

New York, N.Y. - University at Albany's Tristan Akong won the 60-meter dash with the second-fastest time in school history to highlight his team's performance at the New York Road Runners Collegiate Meet, held at the Armory Track and Field Center on Saturday, Feb. 12. The Great Danes finished third in the men's team standings, while the women placed fifth.
Akong sprinted 6.81 seconds to easily defeat Army's Alfred McDaniel (6.91). The sophomore's time was four-hundredths of a second off Junior Burnett's school record and qualified him for the IC4A championships in March. UAlbany's Jake Rachiele was fourth in 6.96, also bettering the IC4A standard.
Freshman Kareem Morris was second in the long jump with a leap of 22-feet, 10.50-inches. Greg Kiley finished third in the 1,000-meter run by running an IC4A time of 2:26.68. Nick Santos and Chris Burke each qualified for the IC4A meet in the 800-meter run. Santos took third in 1:52.15, while Burke was fourth in 1:52.23.
In the women's competition, Sandy Antenor won the triple jump with a mark of 40-5.50, the fourth-best leap in program history. She and teammate Ashley Mahlmeister qualified for the ECAC championships. Mahlmeister jumped 39-feet, 7-inches to tie for fourth place. UAlbany went one-two in the 60-meter hurdles. Christen Griffin edged Yushanni Durrant to garner first place. Griffin sprinted 8.60 seconds to register the fourth-best time in program annals.
A pair of freshman turned in season-best performances. Brianne Bellon ran 2:12.34 in the 800-meter run to hit the tape in third place, while Kathryn Fanning crossed the finish line in 2:53.78 to place third at 1,000-meters. Elia Francis posted a second-place effort in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:16.23.
UAlbany attempts to win its sixth consecutive men's indoor title at the America East Championships on Feb. 18-19 at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center. The Great Danes will look to defend their women's championship.
