Softball Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader to Defending Ivy League Champion Cornell

Ithaca, N.Y. - Pitcher Elizabeth Dalrymple registered eight strikeouts and yielded only three hits in the opener and outfielder Devon March went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the nightcap to help Cornell sweep a non-conference softball doubleheader over UAlbany on Wednesday, April 7 at Niemand Robison Field. The Big Red won the first game, 3-1, and took the second by an 8-4 decision.
In game one, Cornell tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Batting with two runners in scoring position, Ashley Garvey belted a double down the line in left field to give the Big Red a quick lead.
UAlbany cut the lead in half in the fourth. Michelle Connors, who went 2-for-2 in the game, drew a walk and Gina Mason was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Kat Smith sacrificed the runners over to second and third. However, a throwing error by the second baseman on the play after the initial out was recorded allowed Connors to come all the way home for an unearned run. Dalrymple got out of the inning by inducing a popup to short and fanning the next batter to end the frame.
Cornell (17-8), the defending Ivy League champion, regained its two-run advantage in the bottom of the fourth. Ali Tomlinson hit a one-out double to left center to get things going. Two batters later, Erin Keene singled up the middle to plate Tomlinson. However, the second baseman was gunned down by Smith for the inning's third and final out when trying to stretch her hit into a double. Dalrymple only allowed one hit the rest of the way on a double by Connors in the sixth before hanging on the rest of the way for the win.
After fanning eight batters and issuing just one walk, Cornell's Dalrymple improved to 9-2 on the season with the victory in the circle. She surrendered only three hits and one run which was unearned in seven innings of work. UAlbany's Marissa Powell was tagged with her first loss since March 20 against defending Big South Conference champion Radford. She yielded seven hits and three runs while issuing one walk and fanning one batter in six innings.
While pitcher Lauren Marx was working a no-hitter through three and two-thirds innings, the Big Red jumped out to a 5-0 lead by scoring all the runs they needed in the third frame. Menaker doubled in the first run following a pair of costly Great Dane errors to start the inning. After Dayna Belles drew a walk to load the bases, March blasted a two-run double to left field to make it a 3-0 game. A sacrifice fly by Vanessa Leonhard and a double down the left field line by Morgan Cawley plated the last two runs before Allie Weiser, who only surrendered one earned run in the frame, fanned Izzy Pines for the third out.
The Big Red added another tally to go ahead by six through four innings, but the Great Danes started to rally and got on the scoreboard win two runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Jessica Bergin belted a leadoff double to the gap in right center and scored two plays later on a single up the middle by Kylie Apostolina. Katie Wambold singled to keep the inning going, and another hit by Kristine Bill after the second out was recorded sent Bergin home to close the gap to 6-2.
After surrendering one run in the bottom of the fifth, UAlbany continued to chip away at the deficit and scored two more times in the top half of the sixth to make it a three-run game at 7-4. Mason, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning, came home on a throwing error by the catcher, who was unsuccessful at trying to stop Bergin from stealing second. Bergin stole third and scored two plays later on an infield single by Apostolina, which put runners on the corners with one out. However, Wambold lined into a double play to end the inning. An RBI single down the right field line by March in the sixth sealed the final outcome.
Cornell's Marx earned the victory to boost her record to 5-2 this season. She threw five innings and gave up five hits and two runs while issuing one walk and striking out three. Jenn Stoller hurled two innings of relief. She yielded two hits, two runs, including one earned, and fanned three. UAlbany's Weiser dropped to 4-4 after suffering the loss. She surrendered 11 hits while registering two strikeouts and one walk. Only two of the eight runs she gave up were earned.
UAlbany (12-12) resumes America East Conference action this weekend when it hosts Boston University. The teams, which have combined to win six of the last eight titles in the league tournament, are slated to play a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 10 at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, Apr. 4 at 12 p.m.
