Stony Brook Sweeps UAlbany in America East Conference Baseball Action

Albany, N.Y. - William Carmona earned a save in game one and hit a three-run homer in the night cap to lead Stony Brook to a doubleheader sweep of UAlbany in America East Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Seawolves posted a 3-2 victory in the early contest before recording a 10-2 win in the second game.

In game one, UAlbany took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. UAlbany scored its first run in the second inning, as centerfielder Brendan Rowland reached on an error and came home on an RBI single by Pete DiResta. Designated hitter Mike Tirri led off the third with a double into left centerfield, before coming home on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Crean to give the Great Danes a two-run lead.

Stony Brook cut the UAlbany lead to one in the fourth, on an RBI single by Carmona that drove in Chad Marshall. The Seawolves struck again in the sixth to tie the game, getting back-to-back singles to start the inning, while Stephen Marino drove in Pat Cantwell with a sacrifice fly. The game remained knotted until the ninth, as Cantwell knocked a double into right field to score Travis Jankowski. Carmona took the mound in the bottom half of the frame, and despite allowing the Great Danes to get the tying run on board, induced two flyouts to seal the win for the Seawolves.

Greg Lutton took the loss for the Great Danes after a two-inning performance. Starter Dave Kubiak went 7.0 innings with nine strikeouts and no walks. Nick Tropeano earned the win with an eight-inning, 10 strikeout outing.

Stony Brook took a quick lead in the nightcap, as Cantwell scored in the first inning on a wild pitch. The Seawolves' Tyler Johnson held off the UAlbany offense until the fourth, when the Great Danes tied the game with a two-out single by DiResta that drove in Brian Bullard. UAlbany then took a 2-1 lead in the fifth. Nolan Gaige drew a lead-off walk, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Crean. Gaige made it across home on an RBI single by Rowland.

The Seawolves took a 5-2 lead in the sixth, scoring four runs. Stony Brook recorded four two-out hits, including a two-run double by Tanner Nivins and an RBI single by Carmona. The SBU offense continued in the seventh, as the Seawolves scored five runs on two hits. Nivins drove in his third and fourth runs of the game with a single to center, while Carmona's three-run homer set the final score.

Ryan White took the loss for UAlbany in the game, after fanning two and walking two in five and two thirds innings. Tyler Johnson was the winning pitcher for Stony Brook (16-17, AE 6-2), striking out five.

UAlbany (4-27, AE 3-5) will host Stony Brook (16-17, AE 6-2) in a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12 p.m.
