Softball Drops Both Ends of America East Doubleheader to First-Place Maine on Senior Day

Albany, N.Y. - Stephanie George hit a three-run homer in the opener and Terren Hall went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs in the nightcap to power Maine to a doubleheader sweep against UAlbany in America East Conference softball action on Sunday, April 18 at Albany Field. The Black Bears took game one, 5-1, and rallied to win the second contest by a 7-4 score.
After Maine (18-20, AE 7-1) successfully executed a squeeze play in the top of the first inning of the nightcap, UAlbany rallied to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the opening frame. Kristine Bill struck out swinging, but a wild pitch thrown by Alexis Souhlaris on the third strike allowed Bill to take first. Connors then doubled to center field to put two runners in scoring position for Gina Mason, who went yard for a team-leading seventh time this season to put the Great Danes up by two.
UAlbany added another run in the fourth when Nicole Kothe smacked a grounder that went through the legs of the shortstop to score Jess Bergin, who had singled up the middle to start the inning. However, the Black Bears rallied by scoring three times in the top of the sixth to tie the game before adding three more runs in the top of the seventh.
Kirstin Allen hit a two-run double to left center to knot the score at 4-4 in the sixth frame. After the Great Danes went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, the Black Bears regained the lead for good courtesy of a three-run blast by Hall that barely made it over the fence in left. Bill singled to start the seventh and give the hosts some life, but the next three batters went down in order to end the game.
Maine's Souhlaris, the reigning conference co-player of the year, got the start and did not earn a decision after allowing four hits and being tagged for four runs in 3.1 innings of work. She struck out two batters and issued a pair of walks. Beth Spoehr hurled 3.2 scoreless innings of relief and picked up the victory to improve to 2-6 this season. She gave up three hits and fanned five without issuing a walk.
UAlbany's Marissa Powell suffered the loss in the circle and dropped her record to 4-9. The senior, who had gone a stretch of allowing just one earned run in 17 innings before Maine started its six-run rally, allowed 11 hits and seven runs. She also registered four strikeouts and two walks.
In game one, an error by the UAlbany second baseman allowed Maine to push across two unearned runs in the top of the first inning. Maine, which ended the day in first place and just half a game ahead of Boston University, padded its lead in the third when Stephanie George clubbed a three-run homer to dead center. UAlbany plated a run in the bottom of the sixth on a Kat Smith double to right field which was carried by the wind and scored Michelle Connors, but it wasn't enough. The next batter fouled out to the first baseman to end the sixth before the side was retired in the final frame.
Maine's Ashley Kelley, who entered the afternoon with a 3-0 ledger in America East play with three complete-game shutouts, picked up the win in the circle. She improved her record to 9-3 overall by striking out two hitters, issuing one walk and allowing just one run and five hits.
UAlbany's Leah McIntosh took the loss and fell to 5-4 this year. She allowed four hits and five runs, including three earned, while striking out three in three innings. Allie Weiser hurled four strong scoreless innings of relief. She allowed three hits and fanned two batters without issuing a walk.
UAlbany (13-18, AE 5-6) and Maine will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.

Paw Prints: UAlbany's six seniors (Michelle Connors, Nicole Kothe, Leah McIntosh, Marissa Powell, Kat Smith, Bailey Van Deest) were honored in a pre-game ceremony ... Most of the members in the veteran group have been starting since they were freshmen, while all of them have earned postseason recognition for their efforts on the field or in the classroom ... The group has helped UAlbany win America East Conference regular season and tournament championships, register a school record for wins in a season (38), advance to the regional final of the NCAA Tournament and post a 120-68 ledger over the past three-plus seasons ... The Great Danes dropped to fifth place in the conference standings with today's losses, but can move into a tie for fourth with Binghamton with a win over the Black Bears in tomorrow's series finale.
