UAlbany Baseball Drops Finale of Caravalle Resort Tournament to Toledo, 10-8

Conway, S.C. - Third baseman Joe Corfman recorded three hits, including a double, to lead Toledo to a 10-8 win over UAlbany in the Great Danes' final game at the Caravalle Resort Tournament at Watson Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Toledo jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, scoring one run on an RBI single by Jim Vahalik in the first and adding five runs in the second. Chris Dudics recorded a sacrifice hit to score Corfman to start the rally, before Tim Krofcheck knocked a two-run homer over the fence in centerfield. Jared Hoying wrapped up the scoring in the inning, coming home on an Aaron Dudley double.

UAlbany responded with five runs in the top of the third to tie the game at 5-5. The Great Danes loaded the bases with a walk issued to Brendan Rowland. UAlbany scored the first two runs of the inning on passed balls, with Nolan Gaige and Pete DiResta making it home on the Toledo errors. Pete Eichner and Kyle Crean recorded back-to-back singles, with Eichner driving in Rowland. Mike Tirri, who also drew a walk, scored on a sacrifice hit by Brian Bullard. UAlbany scored the final two runs of the inning with bases-loaded walks, before the Rockets changed pitchers to induce a groundout to end the frame.

Toledo responded with four more runs in the bottom of the third, led off by a Dan Sherwood double. Corfman recorded a base hit to send Sherwood home in the next at bat. Krofcheck hit an RBI single to send Corfman home, while a bases-loaded walk to Hoying scored the Rockets' third run. Dudics crossed home plate for Toledo on a ground out to give the Rockets a 9-5 advantage.

The Great Danes pulled back within 9-8 with three runs in the fifth. Bullard led off with a single, followed by a Ralph Keppler double, and scored the first run on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Rowland recorded a two-RBI single up the middle to put UAlbany within striking range. After Rowland moved into scoring position with a stolen base, relief pitcher Lapikas struck out Tirri to get Toledo out of trouble.

The Rockets added and insurance run in the sixth, with Corfman's double and stolen base putting him in position to score on a wild pitch. UAlbany recorded three hits in the sixth to attempt to rally, but Toledo turned a double play to work out of the jam. Mike Inselmann tossed 3.1 innings of relief to earn the save for the Rockets and keep UAlbany's offense at bay.

Greg Lutton took the loss on the mound for UAlbany, while Brian Gauthier posted a strong 3.2 inning outing with four strikeouts. Alex Radon earned the win for Toldeo (5-2) with 1.1 innings of work in relief.

UAlbany (0-6) returns to action on Friday, March 12, starting a four-game series at New York Tech.
