Rowland Homers as Baseball Closes Out California Swing With Loss to Sacramento State

Sacremento, Calif. - Shortstop Kirby Young went 3-for-3 with five runs scored and four RBI to led Sacramento State to a 22-2 win over UAlbany in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon. The game was the last of a seven-game California swing for the Great Danes.

Sacramento State (8-14-1) led, 6-1, after two innings, and added another three in the fourth to take a 9-2 advantage. Both of UAlbany's runs came on solo homers. Pete DiResta put the Great Danes on the board in the first frame with a shot to left, while senior centerfielder Brendan Rowland hit a long ball over the fence in left centerfield in the top of the fourth.

The Hornets took advantage of a shaky UAlbany bullpen later in the game, putting up six runs in the sixth and seven in the seventh. Reliever Terry McFadden had the longest outing on the mound for the Great Danes, throwing two and two thirds innings after entering the game in the second. Six other pitchers saw action for UAlbany, including starter Travis Wilson, who took the loss.

Sacramento State's offense accounted for 21 hits in the game, with all but one position player recording at least one hit. Young, Josh Powers and Trevor Paine all finished with three hits apiece, while four other Hornets finished with multiple hits. Jesse Darrah earned the win on the mound with an eight-inning performance, striking out six opposing batters.

UAlbany (1-19) will have a week off before returning to action on Wednesday, April 7, at Manhattan.
