Greensboro, N.C. - UNC Greensboro exploded for eight runs in the seventh inning, and took advantage of six UAlbany errors in the game to record a 13-1 win over the Great Danes in the series finale of a three-game non-conference baseball matchup at UNCG Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
For the third straight game, UAlbany scored first, putting one run on the board in the top of the second inning. UNCG pitcher Warren Slack got two quick outs to start the frame before Jamie Liebowitz hit a single into right after a lengthy at bat. Jeff Welsh and Nolan Gaige followed with consecutive singles, with Gaige's knock into left sending Liebowitz home. The Spartans responded in the bottom of the third, as Lloyd Enzor hit a two-run homer over the right field fence, scoring Corey Overholtzer, who recorded a base hit to start the inning.
After tacking on two additional runs in the fifth inning, UNCG (6-1) exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the seventh. Overholtzer opened the frame with a double, and scored the first run via a UAlbany fielding error. Ed Jayjack and Enzor added two runs to the Spartans' total, coming home on a Zach Leach double. Leach later scored on a single by Chris Barker down the right field line. UNCG inserted pinch hitters as the batting order came back around, and they accounted for the Spartans' final runs, including a two-RBI single by Kris Richards. UNCG would tack on one more run in the eighth, as Leach lead off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch.
UAlbany's offense recorded seven hits, but the Spartans' pitching combo of Slack and Cody Hyatt struck out seven opposing batters. Slack earned the win for the Spartans, while UAlbany starter Greg Lutton took the loss for UAlbany, despite fanning three batters in 4.2 innings of work.
UAlbany (0-3) will return to action next weekend at the Caravalle Resort Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina.
