Men's Soccer Rallies Twice Before Falling to Boston University, 3-2, in Overtime

Albany, N.Y. - Michael Bustamante scored a goal and added two assists, including the helper on the game-winning tally, to lead Boston University to a 3-2 overtime victory over the UAlbany men's soccer team in the America East Conference regular-season finale on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Varsity Field. The Great Danes, who honored seniors Claudio Dantas and Joe Hogan prior to the match, rallied from behind on two occasions to force an extra session before Matthew Shea punched in the golden goal in the 95th minute.
The Terriers, which were ranked as high as 14th in the NSCAA/adidas national poll this season, wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with wind gusts approaching 30 miles per hour to their backs. Bustamante took a pass from Samuel Appiah and blasted a shot to the far post from 25 yards out in the sixth minute.
Both squads struggled to penetrate the opposing defenses until combining to score three goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Shaun Kane sparked the wild finish when he took a loose ball at the top right corner of the box and fired a shot to the far post past a diving Trevor McManamon in the 80th minute.
Boston U. (9-6-2, AE 3-4-0) answered right back six minutes later to take a 2-1 lead. Michael Bustamante came down the left endline and made a quick pass back to Aaron O'Neal, who one-timed a shot past goalkeeper Adrian Foncette.
UAlbany (0-13-3, AE 0-6-1), which defeated the Terriers by a 3-0 score at Nickerson Field last season, did not quit and took advantage of a free kick in the 89th minute to force overtime. David Pinto sent the ball into the box from 40 yards away. Anthony DeSalvo took the service and made the extra pass to Konner McNamara, and the sophomore defender sent the ball to the back of the net. Pinto and DeSalvo were both credited with assists on the play.
The Terriers, who were playing the extra session with the wind in their favor, ended the seesaw battle when Shea took a cross from Bustamante and blasted the ball past Foncette for the golden goal in the 95th minute. The marker was the junior's first career tally.
BU outshot UAlbany, 14-9, and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Foncette finished with four saves for the Great Danes, while McManamon, who was making his first career start for the Terriers, stopped three shots to earn the victory.
