San Diego, Calif. ? After beginning the season a perfect 3-0 overall for the first time ever since joining the Division I ranks in 1999, the University at Albany men's soccer team took a 6-0 loss to San Diego State in the Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Central Soccer Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 7. The Great Danes played practically the entire match a man down after a defender received a red card for a hand ball in the second minute of action.
Khadim Diouf converted the penalty kick awarded to San Diego State (1-1) for the hand ball to give the Aztecs an early lead. UAlbany (3-1) only trailed 1-0 at halftime thanks to the stellar play of freshman goalkeeper Adrian Foncette, who saved six of the seven shots he faced on net in the frame.
Led by Joe Corona's two goals, the Aztecs used their one-man advantage to find the back of the net five more times in the second half. Daniel Steres, Raymundo Reza and Evan Toft also scored in the stanza.
. UAlbany's Foncette made nine saves on 15 opportunities in the losing effort. Jorge Rosales started the match for San Diego State and was relieved by Morgan Maestas in the 62nd minute once the Aztecs built up a 4-0 lead. Rosales and Maestas did not have to face a shot on goal, and Rosales was credited with the victory.
With the loss, the Great Danes placed third overall in the tournament for posting a 1-1 record. UAlbany's Claudio Dantas and Mikael McNamara made the all-tournament team. Michigan, the only undefeated team in the tournament with a record of 1-0-1, won the championship. San Diego State placed second with a 1-1 mark for winning the head-to-head tiebreaker over UAlbany, and San Diego was fourth after finishing 0-1-1.
The Great Danes will remain on the road on Friday evening to face Rhode Island at 7 p.m.
