Baltimore,
Md. ? Joe Fowler hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to lead UMBC to a 15-8
win over UAlbany in America East baseball action on Sunday, May 4 at The
Baseball Factory Field at UMBC. The
Retrievers took three of four games during the weekend series.
UMBC (19-24, AE 11-9) jumped out to
a 3-0 lead in the opening inning. Will Delawter doubled to left center to plate
Scott Peddicord, who reached on a single, with the first run. Shawn Retz
followed with a two-run single to right center to drive in Delawter and Fowler,
who walked to get on base. The Great Danes responded with four runs over the
next two innings. Junior Gary Pitcheralle started the scoring with a two-run
blast to left field, his fourth home run of the season, to drive in classmate
Ryan Gugel, who was hit by a pitch. In the third, junior Dave West connected
for a solo homer to left center with one out. After consecutive hits by
sophomore Brendan Rowland and Mike Konstanty, Gugel grounded out to knock in
Rowland.
The Retrievers regained the lead in
their half of the fourth inning. Tom Meaney and Steve Russo opened the frame
with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Meaney scored on a groundout and
Russo crossed home plate on a wild pitch. Konstanty put the Great Danes back in
front, 6-5, in the fifth inning with a two-run shot to left center to tie the program's
single-season record with 12 home runs.
UMBC blew the game open in the sixth
inning on Fowler's grand slam to center field. The Retrievers loaded the bases
on a double by Russo, a walk to Rich Conlon and an infield single by Brad
Brainer. Following a UAlbany pitching change and a strikeout, Fowler gave the
Retrievers a 9-6 lead. In the seventh inning, UMBC tacked on five runs on six
hits. Wink Nolan singled and Meaney doubled to open the frame. Russo then flew
out to right field to plate Nolan and Conlon followed with a run-scoring single
to drive in Meaney. Following a strikeout, Peddicord doubled in Conlon to give
UMBC a 12-6 lead. Fowler and Delawter recorded consecutive run-scoring hits to
close out the inning.
UAlbany (12-34-1, AE 7-13) was able
to push across one run in each of the final two innings. The Great Danes loaded
the bases as Tom Zink was hit by a pitch and Pete Eichner and Sean Donovan
singled. UMBC's Austin Drewyer then uncorked a wild pitch to allow Zink to
score. The Retrievers got the run back in their half of the eighth as Conlon
doubled home Russo, who reached on a two-out single. The Great Danes closed out
the game's scoring in the ninth as freshman Kyle Crean singled back to the
pitcher to drive in Konstanty, who led off the inning by getting hit by a
pitch.
Junior Nate Novak took the loss for
the Great Danes, allowing eight runs on 11 hits over five innings. Drewyer
picked up the win in relief of Ed Bach, tossing 3.1 innings, while allowing two
runs.
The Great Danes return to action on
Tuesday, May 6 at Varsity Field against Le Moyne at 4 p.m.
