Albany,
N.Y. ? Justin Albert tossed a complete-game six-hitter and Kyle Massie drove in
the winning run in the ninth inning to lead Vermont to a 3-1 America East
Conference baseball come-from-behind victory over UAlbany on Sunday, April 27
at Varsity Field.
After six-and-one-half scoreless
innings, UAlbany broke through with an unearned run in the bottom of the
seventh frame. Senior Tom Zink reached on a fielding error with one out. After
freshman Kyle Crean registered his third hit of the contest, Zink raced home on
a wild pitch to give the Great Danes a 1-0 lead.
Vermont (19-17, AE 6-6) answered
back in the top of the ninth inning, Ethan Paquette was hit with a one-out
pitch by reliever Casey Walsh to start the Catamounts' rally. Kyle Henry
followed with a single up the middle to move pinch runner Frank Petroskey over
to third. Catcher Jeff Nolet then singled just past Crean's outstretched dive near
second base to drive in a run. Massie followed with a soft liner to center to
knock in Henry from third. After Brad Currier loaded the bases with a single
just in front of diving center fielder Dave West, reliever Sean Gregory
uncorked a wild pitch to allow Nolet to score from third.
Albert retired all three batters he
faced in the ninth inning to finish his second complete game of the season.
Albert struck out 10 batters, while allowing just the unearned run on six hits,
to record his third win of the season. Junior right-hander Nate Novak pitched
seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out four, to
start the game for the Great Danes. Walsh suffered the loss, yielding three
runs on four hits over 1.1 innings. Crean led UAlbany at the plate, picking up
three hits in three plate appearances, while junior catcher Ryan Gugel
registered two hits.
UAlbany (11-31-1, AE 6-10) returns
to action for a non-conference matchup against Marist on Tuesday, April 29 at
3:00 p.m.
