Old
Westbury, N.Y. ? Christian Dienna went 4-for-7 with three RBI to lead New York
Tech to a doubleheader sweep of seven inning contests over the UAlbany baseball
team on Saturday, March 15 at President's Field. The Bears took game one 11-4
and rallied for a 9-8 victory in game two.
In game one, NYIT jumped out to an
11-0 lead after three innings. Effrey Valdez tallied the first run with a
two-out solo home run in the first inning. The Bears blew the game open in the
second inning with nine runs. Julian Richards plated Brian Smith with a single
to open the scoring. Following a run-scoring balk, Bob Garland walked and
Denten Neill reached on an error to load the bases with no outs. Jerry Smith
walked and Valdez
was hit by a pitch to force in a pair of runs. Following a strikeout, Mike
LaLuna plated Neill and Jerry Smith with a single to knock UAlbany starter Nate
Novak out of the game. Brian Smith and Tom Leonick greeted relief pitcher Jeff
Kaier with their second hits of the inning to close out the scoring. NYIT
tallied its final run of the game with an RBI single in the third by Dienna to
score Neill from second.
UAlbany cut into the deficit with
three unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning. Junior center fielder Dave
West recorded a one-out single and scored when junior shortstop Sean Donovan
reached on an error. Following a groundout, junior designated hitter Ryan Gugel
plated Donovan and senior Mike Konstanty with a double.
The Great Danes closed out the
game's scoring with a single run in the top of the seventh inning. After
consecutive errors to load the bases with one out, Pete Eichner registered a
sacrifice fly to center field to drive in senior catcher Tom Zink.
Novak suffered his third loss of the
season, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on six hits over just an inning and
one-third. Kaier allowed two runs on four hits in one and two-third innings on
the mound. Senior Marco Rivera and junior Chris Ott combined for three
strikeouts and just one hit over the final three innings.
In the nightcap, the Great Danes
plated four runs in the opening inning. Sophomore second baseman Brendan
Rowland led off the inning with a double. Two batters later, West reached on an
error to load the bases. Konstanty knocked in Rowland with a fielder's choice. After
West was thrown out trying to steal third, Zink singled and Donovan walked to
re-load the bases. Freshman designated hitter Jamie Liebowitz plated Konstanty
with a single and was followed up by a Gugel two-run single to cap the frame.
NYIT (4-3) responded with three runs
in the bottom of the inning. Brian Smith knocked in Neill with a single to
start the inning. Jerry Smith plated his twin brother with a fielder's choice
and Joe Lucente followed with a run-scoring single.
UAlbany (3-10-1) got one run back in
the second inning on a one-out solo homer by junior left fielder Gary
Pitcheralle. The Bears took a 6-5 lead with three runs in the bottom of the
frame. George Carroll scored the first run on an error by Rowland. Following a
strikeout, Dienna recorded a two-run single to give the Bears the edge.
The Great Danes retook the lead in
the fifth inning on a pair of unearned runs. With the bases loaded, Gugel
reached on a throwing error by the first baseman to allow Zink and Konstanty to
score. The lead was short-lived as NYIT went ahead for good in the bottom of
the inning on a three-run blast by Lucente.
Gugel got the Great Danes within one
in the seventh inning with a single to plate Zink, but Preston Wasmund induced
a game-ending groundout.
Junior Cory Warrings took the loss
for UAlbany, striking out five over five innings, but yielding nine runs (three
earned) on six hits. Wasmund earned the win in relief for the Bears, striking
out three over two and one-third innings, allowing just an unearned run. Andrew
Guarrasi allowed seven runs (two earned) over the first four and two-third
innings for NYIT, registering five strikeouts.
Zink and Gugel each recorded three
hits for the Great Danes, with Zink scoring three times and Gugel driving in
three runs.
UAlbany returns to action on
Tuesday, March 18 for a 1:30 doubleheader at Hofstra.
