Chapel Hill, N.C. ? Freshman attacker Corey Donohue had four goals and Kristen Taylor scored three times in leading nationally-ranked North Carolina to an 18-6 win over UAlbany on Saturday, Feb. 23 at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 3 by Inside Lacrosse and No. 4 in the IWLCA coaches' poll.
North Carolina (3-0) leaped to a 6-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes of play and was never threatened. Julia Ryan found the net twice in that outburst, including the game's first goal with three minutes and 45 seconds elapsed. Jenn Russell, a sophomore midfielder, tallied the first of her two goals after defender Britta Williams forced a turnover.
The Tar Heels, who reached the NCAA quarterfinals one year ago and opened the 2008 campaign with victories over Loyola, Md. and Denver, rolled to an 11-0 halftime margin. Kristen and Kelly Taylor, sisters from Central New York, scored back-to-back goals late in the period.
UAlbany (0-1) showed some resolve in the second half against the perennial power. Freshman Nikki Branchini tallied a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes of the period. Rory Redmond and Tee Ladouceur scored consecutive unassisted goals to close the gap to 14-5 with 15:05 remaining.
North Carolina, who began the 2007 season with eight consecutive victories, regained the momentum with three straight goals. Kristen Taylor and Corey Donohue started the spurt. Chelsea Parks added two goals and two assists, while Kelly Taylor scored twice.
