Burlington, Vt. - Senior right-hander John Naples went six innings, fanning four, to earn the victory, as one of three UAlbany pitchers who combined to strand 16 Vermont baserunners, as the Great Danes defeated the Catamounts, 3-1, in America East Conference action on Friday afternoon at Centennial Field.
UAlbany (24-26, AE 11-10) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Third baseman Steve Wyland knocked a leadoff single before catcher Tom Hill was walked. Shortstop Sean Donovan was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Great Danes. First baseman Steve Sayre recorded a sacrifice fly to centerfield, driving in Wyland. Hill later scored on an wild pitch.
The Great Danes tacked on another run in the top of the eighth, as second baseman Al Barbato doubled down the left field line to score Donovan, who reached after being hit by a pitch for the second time.
UAlbany's Sean Gregory struck out three in the seventh and eighth innings while Alexander Beaulieu gave up a pair of hits in the ninth before going on to earn his eighth save of the season. Wyland and left fielder Mike Konstanty each had two hits.
Bryan Rembisz went seven innings on the mound for Vermont (20-27, AE 9-11) giving up four hits and two runs while striking out five. At the plate, Kyle Henry went 2-for-3 with a double and two walks while Brad Currier was 2-for-5.
The teams face off in a conference doubleheader on Saturday, starting at noon.
