Stony Brook, N.Y - Senior right-fielder Leo Corvino went 3-for-4 with three RBI, including driving in the game-tying run in the top of the ninth inning to lead UAlbany to an 8-7 win over Stony Brook in the America East Conference series finale on Sunday afternoon at University Field.
The Great Danes were down one run, 7-6, heading into the final frame. Pinch hitter Zac Halloran recorded a base hit to advance Phil Marchese, who reached on a fielder's choice. Corvino then knocked an RBI single to score Marchese to tie the game at 7-7. Halloran crossed the plate for what would prove to be the game-winning run during the next at bat, as third baseman Steve Wyland forced a fielder's choice that resulted in the second out of the inning, but allowed the run to score.
Stony Brook (17-16, AE 8-3) had taken a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, as the Seawolves were able to score two runs. Designated hitter Michael Stephan led off the inning with a double and was driven home on a sacrifice hit by left fielder Michael Tansey. Robert Leonard scored the go-ahead run on a balk by UAlbany pitcher Jeff Kaier.
UAlbany (15-19, AE 2-6) tied the game back at 5-5 in the next inning as Sean Donovan scored on an error by Stony Brook second baseman Chris Sipp. However, the Seawolves regained a two-run advantage in their half of the seventh, as Sipp doubled to send shortstop Keith Fier across home plate and later stole home.
Corvino closed the gap back to one in the eighth as he scored on a fielder's choice. Sophomore right-hander Cory Warrings went 4.2 innings on the mound for the Great Danes, fanning three and issuing just one walk. Junior closer Alexander Beaulieu earned his first win of the season with a 2.1-inning performance. Beaulieu struck out three for the Great Danes.
Senior righty Kurt Jung fanned three in six innings for Stony Brook, while Leonard took the mound in the seventh to take the loss. Leonard finished with two hits, one run scored and one RBI while playing right field, and struck out two batters while pitching. Sipp recorded a team-best three hits, scored two runs and drove in another.
The Great Danes return home on Wednesday, hosting St. John's for a non-conference game starting at 3 p.m.
