Albany, N.Y ? Senior centerfielder Kraig Binick went 4-for-4 with one run scored and three RBI to lead New York Institute of Technology to a 9-4 win over UAlbany in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Bears also won the first game by a 3-2 margin.
Binick led the Bears in their four-run third inning, driving a triple to centerfield to score two runs. NYIT (11-14) built up a 7-0 lead in the top of the third before allowing UAlbany to score its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Senior second baseman Steve Wyland singled and advanced to second on an error before being driven home on a sacrifice fly by Sean Donovan.
The Great Danes added two more runs to their total in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer by Brendan Rowland (Colonie Central) that scored Mike Konstanty. NYIT tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach for UAlbany. Senior lefthander Jon Burke earned the win for the Bears, going 6.0 innings, striking out six and allowing three earned runs.
Wyland, along with catcher Chris Wood, finished with two hits apiece for UAlbany. Sophomore lefty Cory Warrings dropped to 0-4 with the loss.
In game one, UAlbany jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning as catcher Tom Hill scored on an RBI single by right fielder Leo Corvino (Columbia). NYIT took a one-run advantage in the top of the third as Mike LaLuna and Tom Murray recorded back-to-back RBI singles for the Bears.
UAlbany (13-17) tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth, as left-hander Joe Esposito walked four straight, including the tying run. Esposito was able to work himself out of the inning, drawing a flyout by Hill with three men left on base.
The Bears scored what would prove to be the winning run in the sixth, as outfielder Bob Garland was walked in by UAlbany reliever Jeff Kaier.
Kaier entered the game in relief of starter Casey Walsh, who threw 5.2 innings with nine strikeouts and three earned runs. Esposito went the distance on the mound for NYIT, fanning five and issuing eight walks. Murray had a game-high three hits for the Bears, while Hill and Corvino recorded the only hits for UAlbany.
The series finale, scheduled to take place on Sunday, has been cancelled due to impending weather. UAlbany will return to action on Tuesday, April 17 at LeMoyne in non-conference play.
