Albany, N.Y. - Freshman leftfielder Brendan Rowland went 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI to lead UAlbany to a 10-7 win over New York Institute of Technology in non-conference baseball action on Friday, April 13 at Varsity Field.
The Great Danes scored at least one run in all but one inning, starting with a three-run first to take an early lead. NYIT posted four runs in the top of the third to tie the game at 4-4, but right fielder Leo Corvino was driven home on a Rowland single in the bottom of the frame to reclaim the lead for the Great Danes.
Corvino added to UAlbany's lead in the sixth inning, leading off with a double and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Senior catcher Chris Wood drove Corvino home for his second run of the day with a single during the next at bat.
NYIT (9-14) pulled within three runs, 9-6, scoring two in the top of the seventh. Centerfielder Kraig Binick drove an RBI single to left field to score Bob Garland while catcher Tom Murray recorded a sacrifice fly to score second baseman Brian Smith later in the inning.
UAlbany (13-15) tacked on another insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single to third that drove Corvino home for his third run of the game. Corvino finished with two hits, both doubles, and one stolen base for the Great Danes.
Senior right-hander John Naples earned the win for UAlbany, improving to 4-2 on the season. Naples went six innings on the mound, fanning six, allowing five hits and issuing no walks. Alexander Beaulieu entered in the ninth inning to record his fifth save of the season.
Smith finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI for the Bears, while Murray recorded two hits, including a two-run homer in the third inning.
UAlbany will host NYIT in the continuation of the four-game series on Saturday, with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
