Women’s Basketball Shows Fight in Home Battle

SHORT STORY: UAlbany shot 48 percent and matched Maine through three quarters before a late Black Bears surge from deep nudged the visitors ahead in a tight finish, Thursday night.

  • Freshman Amaya Stewart led UAlbany with a team-high 20 points on 8-10 shooting, adding four rebounds.
  • Sophomore Martina Borrellas posted 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds, going 6-12 from the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Delanie Hill set the tone early with a three-point play at the rim to give UAlbany the first basket of the night.
  • Graduate student Júlia Palomo Vicente and junior Lara Langermann each knocked down early jumpers as the Great Danes matched Maine in the paint.
  • In the closing minutes, Martina Borrellas powered in back-to-back layups and added a free throw for a five-point burst that pulled UAlbany within four, 18-14, after one.
  • Hill opened the frame with a three from the wing as UAlbany continued to attack confidently on the offensive end.
  • Amaya Stewart brought a spark off the bench with seven points in the period, cashing in at the line and finishing at the rim to keep the Great Danes within one or two possessions.
  • Borrellas converted a second-chance layup, and Langermann raced out for a transition and-one before Stewart beat the horn in the final minute, sending UAlbany into halftime tied 29-29.
  • Gabriela Falcão buried two midrange jumpers to start the half and give UAlbany a two-point edge.
  • Borrellas went to work inside with three strong finishes and two made free throws while the Great Danes shot 70 percent in the quarter.
  • Stewart continued her surge with seven third-quarter points, including an and-one finish in traffic, as UAlbany matched Maine shot for shot and headed to the fourth tied 48-48.
  • Falcão drove for an early layup, and Stewart answered a Maine run with back-to-back finishes at the rim to keep the game within one or two possessions.
  • Borrellas scored through contact with just over two minutes left, and Stewart added two more late buckets as UAlbany continued to attack the paint.
  • The Great Danes stayed aggressive to the final buzzer, closing on a Stewart layup and a clean look for Palomo Vicente in the final seconds before Maine sealed the 65-60 final at the line.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will continue at home with their National Girls and Women in Sports Day game against New Hampshire on Saturday (Jan. 24).
