Grahek, Scozzari Hit Triples, Softball Splits Final Day in the District of Columbia

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes opened the day with a strong win over Manhattan before falling to George Washington, Sunday.
 
GAME ONE

KEY STATS
  • Sophomore Taylor Quinn led with two hits while junior Deanna Grahek tallied a team-high two RBI.
  • Freshmen Ava Beal and Charlotte Lomb along with redshirt-senior Victoria Vilarchao each added an RBI in the five-run game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Taylor Quinn and Ava Beal opened the contest with two consecutive singles.
  • Hayley Wieczerzak struck out her first batter with the Jaspers' lead-off batter.
  • For the second consecutive inning, the Great Danes started with a single - this time from senior Caitlyn Frederick.
  • After Frederick stole second, Charlotte Lomb hit a single to center field to bring in Frederick for the Great Danes' first run of the contest.
  • Wieczerzak added two strikeouts each in the second and fourth innings while striking out all three batters in the third inning.
  • In the fifth inning, Lomb drew a walk and senior Christie Collins followed with a bunted single.
  • With two runners in scoring position, Beal hit a single for an RBI as Lomb crossed home.
  • Victoria Vilarchao added an RBI with the third single of the inning.
  • Freshmen Jenny Nardelli and Kaitlyn Parisi, both pinch-running, scored as Deanna Grahek hit a triple to center field to make it a 5-0 UAlbany lead.
  • Manhattan made a run with two sac flies in the bottom of the seventh but the Great Danes were able to get the third out and win the game, 5-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ava Beal opened the contest with an infield single.
  • Mary Kate Murray (single) and Scozzari (triple) added hits in the second and third inning, respectively, before the Great Dane defense allowed the Revs' first hit of the game in the bottom of the third.
  • George Washington took advantage of a single baserunner, from their second hit of the day, to score a run in the bottom of the fourth.
  • In the fifth inning, the Revolutionaries loaded the bases before Ashley Corpuz hit a grand slam to give GW a 5-0 lead.
  • Neither team was able to get on base throughout the remainder of the game and the Revs won, 5-0.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will compete in their final regular-season tournament at Mount St. Mary's - the Mount Softball Invitational (Mar. 15-16).
