BOSTON - The University at Albany softball team swept the America East's weekly awards, announced Tuesday.
For the second week in a row, freshman
Hayley Wieczerzak was named Pitcher of the Week. Sophomore transfer
Taylor Quinn earned Player of the Week while
Ava Beal was honored with Rookie of the Week.
A native of North Brunswick, N.J., Wieczerzak beat her own career-high with 15 strikeouts in a six-inning shutout against Mount St. Mary's on Friday (Mar. 14). Pitching a near perfect game, she allowed just one hit and walked just one batter. Overall, the freshman recorded a 1.40 ERA through 10.0 innings pitched with 20 strikeouts.
Being named AE Player of the Week for the first time in her career, Quinn slashed .400/.438/.667 with six hits in 15 at bats. Throughout a 3-1 weekend for the Great Danes, the Capital Region local totaled four RBI and five runs scored. In one game alone (MSM, 3.15), Quinn hit two triples for three RBI and scored two runs.
Starting all games on the weekend for the first time, Beal had a .800 OPS with six hits in 15 at bats. A freshman from Quakertown, Pa., she scored two runs and drove in three.
As a team, the Great Danes now have four weekly awards on the season.
UAlbany returns to action at Army for a midweek doubleheader at 1 pm on Wednesday (Mar. 19).
